DALTON, Mass. -- Allie Borowsky struck out eight, and the Wahconah softball team strung together six hits in a four-run third inning Tuesday en route to a 5-2 win over Mount Everett at Pine Grove Park.

“We’ve struggled at times to get the timely hit, and today we kind of got it in bunches there,” Wahconah coach Dustin Belcher said.

“But what I’m most proud of today is today was the first day this year when we made a couple of miscues defensively, it didn’t spiral out of control. We’ve played a lot of good games where we had one bad inning, and it catches up to us.

“Today, we weren’t perfect, but when we made the one mistake, we had the right response every time.”

Abby Wells went 2-for-3 with a double and started the decisive rally with a leadoff single.

Jess Warren, Borowsky, Jess Duma, Julia O’Connor and Kelly McMahon each followed with singles.

Borowsky and Duma each had two-out RBI singles.

Mount Everett struck for a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to trim the lead to 4-2.

Jaclyn Derwitsch led off with a single and ended up scoring on a single by Kersten Cutlip. Cutlip came home on a two-base error with two out.

But as Belcher pointed out, Wahconah did not let the miscue mushroom. Instead, Borowsky bore down and got the third out on a swinging strike to end the threat.

And Wahconah answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth when Hailey Lenski bunted her way aboard and moved to third on Wells’ double. An error allowed Lenski to score from there.

Chandler DeGrenier struck out five for Mount Everett (12-2), which saw a nine-game winning streak come to an end.

“I told the girls before the game: The season starts today,” Mount Everett coach Kurt DeGrenier said. “We have to prepare for the tournament, and you can’t have an inning like [the third]. You’ve got to find ways to make plays and win ballgames.

“But [Wahconah’s] a good team, so this kind of game helps you, even in a loss.”

Mount Everett will look to get back on the winning track on Thursday when it hosts Mount Greylock.

Wahconah (9-5) hosts Hoosac Valley on Thursday evening.
