Pittsfield Beats Mount Greylock for First Win
PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Pittsfield softball team Friday jumped on top early and added runs late to earn its first win of the season, a 10-5 victory over Mount Greylock.
Amelia Polidoro went 3-for-4 with a double, and Ava McMahon went the distance in the circle as the Generals improved to 1-4 this spring.
“We needed that one,” Pittsfield coach Brian MacDonald said. “Obviously, we’ve got a tough schedule, so coming in here and seeing that [Mount Greylock] won against Monument yesterday, we were a little on edge.
“But our bats came alive early and then again in the end to really help us out.”
Pittsfield scored six times in the bottom of the first inning with Lexi Spratling delivering a two-run single and Gionnah Levardi lofting a two-run double into left field.
Kaelyn Fields’ RBI single in the second tacked on a run. But then the Generals’ offense quieted down until it rallied for three in the bottom of the sixth after Mount Greylock had pulled to within two runs.
“We’re like the cardiac kids,” Mount Greylock coach Mark Pierson said. “They wake up once we get a little behind.”
The Mounties (1-2) fell behind Wahconah, 6-0, in the opener, and 6-1 to the Spartans in an eventual win on Thursday.
On Friday, Evy Clairmont provided some pop in the Mount Greylock lineup. Her first-inning single factored into the run that scored on an RBI groundout from Audrianna Pelkey. In the fifth, Clairmont tripled and scored a run in a three-run rally that made it a 7-5 game.
But like all three run-scoring innings for the Mounties, Ava MacMahon closed the door.
The Pittsfield pitcher stranded runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth and left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.
“She was a little upset she wasn’t getting some of her calls, but we know that we don’t talk about the umpire,” Brian MacDonald said. “So we’ve just got to keep grinding, and that’s exactly what she did. She just kept fighting on the mound, and she did a great job.”
Pitching also was a bright spot for Mount Greylock.
Kaleigh Jaros moved from third to the circle during Pittsfield’s first-inning onslaught and limited the damage. She then held the Generals to just one run from the second through fifth innings, allowing Mount Greylock to get back in the game.
“I think that’s the best she’s pitched all year,” Pierson said. “If she can keep doing that, we’ll be successful.”
The Generals finally figured her out in the sixth.
One-out singles from Polidoro and Mia DeJesus started the rally, which also included an RBI single by Arianna Perkins to make it a five-run lead going to the seventh.
Pittsfield will look to stay in the win column on Monday when it heads to Agawam.
Mount Greylock Monday hosts Lenox.
