Mounties, Crusaders Rained Out

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Three outs away from their seventh win of the year, the Mount Greylock Regional High School softball team saw their afternoon washed from the record books.

The Mounties led St. Joseph, 1-0, after three innings on Wednesday, when the first rain the region has seen in a couple of weeks intensified to the point where the umpires decided the field was unplayable.

Rain factored into the biggest defensive play of the afternoon.

After St. Joe (5-5) loaded the bases with one out on a hit batter, an infield single and a walk, Mount Greylock pitcher Tomkowicz delivered a pitch that slipped from her hand and bounced halfway to the plate.

St. Joe's Alex Desrochers thought about trying to score from third, but instead she got caught in a rundown between catcher Kendall Frye and third baseman Celeste Gravel. Gravel applied the tag for the inning's second out.

Tomkowicz then got the hitter to fly out to shortstop, ending the threat.

Moments later, Mother Nature ended the game.

Mount Greylock scored the afternoon's only run on the second pitch thrown by St. Joe's Chanler Hospot.

Anna Penna drilled that 0-1 offering into right field, where it took one bounce and skipped over the fielder's glove, allowing Penna to circle the bases for a home run that — like the rest of the game —was wiped off the books.

The Mounties and Crusaders will make up the game in its entirety at a later date.
