Newberry Delivers Walkoff Win for Mount Greylock

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Emma Newberry hit a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the seventh to give the Mount Greylock softball team a 4-3, walkoff win over Smith Academy in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament on Friday.
 
Mia Alpi started the winning rally by drawing a leadoff walk after falling behind in the count, 1-2.
 
Jordyn Codding then bunted her way aboard,and A.J. Pelkey singled to right to load the bases with nobody out.
 
Newberry ripped a line drive to center field to score Alpi and complete Mount Greylock’s come-from-behind win.
 
No. 11 Smith Academy (3-8) surprised the sixth-seeded Mounties (10-4) by jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
 
In the third, Audrina Pelkey drove in a pair of runs with a single to make it 3-2.
 
In the the fifth, Kelsey MacHaffie drove in a run to tie it.
 
Codding and Pelkey each went 3-for-4 with a double to lead Mount Greylock’s offense. MacHaffie went 2-for-3.
 
Kami Sweet went the distance in the circle, striking out nine.
 
Mount Greylock moves on to Monday’s quarter-finals at St. Mary’s of Westfield, a 14-5 winner over Lee on Friday.
