Spartans Come Back to Win in OT on the Road
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Finn Mason scored four of his 18 points in overtime Friday as the Monument Mountain boys basketball team snapped a three-game skid with a 66-63, come-from-behind win over South Hadley.
Finn Wheeler scored 16 points, and Dom Calutti added 13 as the Spartans improved to 3-4 this winter.
“We needed this one bad and our guys came out in the second half with a mission, and I couldn't be more proud of the way we persevered through the second half and the end of regulation,” Monument Mountain coach Randy Koldys said. “It’s a great win to build on.”
The Tigers led, 37-28, at half-time and were up by seven going to the fourth.
Wheeler scored seven, and Calautti added six in the fourth to briefly give Monument Mountain the lead, but South Hadley’s Noah Hambley (23 points) hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Jackson Nelson (six points) knocked down a 3-pointer to start overtime, and Calautti scored four to help the Spartans take a 62-57 lead.
South Hadley cut it to two points before Calautti’s two free throws put Monument Mountain up, 64-60. But the Tigers got a triple to make it a one-point game.
“Finn Mason calmly made two free throws to up the lead to 66-63, and Hambley missed a deep, contested 3,” Koldys said.
Monument Mountain will look to get back to .500 on Tuesday when it hosts Hoosac Valley.
