This week's iBerkshires.com Athletes of the Week helped their teams end 2023 on a high note.

No one had a better week than the Pittsfield boys basketball team, and no one was a bigger part of that than the Generals' big man.

Carter Mungin has scored 17 points per game for 4-2 Pittsfield, which went 3-0 in the last week of the calendar year with a pair of victories on back-to-back night in Albany followed by a convincing home matinee on Friday.

Mungin led the way with 20 points in a three-point win over Colonie High School on Tuesday and scored 21 the next night to help beat Guilderland.

He then added a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Amherst in Pittsfield's home opener to move to 4-2.

Pittsfield has just one game this week before returning to the site of its season opener for another crack at Taconic at the Boys and Girls Club on Jan. 9.

The 2022-23 season did not get off to a good start for the 2021-22 state finalists from Hoosac Valley.

Neither did the last week of December, when the Hurricanes dropped a seven-point decision to unbeaten Pittsfield.

But the Hurricanes turned things around with a pair of home wins to get back to .500 and a fresh start for the new year.

Taylor Garabedian helped lead the way in both wins, scoring 12 points on Thursday against South Hadley and coming back 24 hours later with 15 points and 10 boards in a rivalry win over Drury.

"I think it got the ball rolling for us, and we're just going to keep pushing throughout the whole season now," Garabedian said of the comeback win over the Blue Devils.

Hoosac Valley (3-3) puts that to the test on Tuesday when it tries to get its first road win of the year at Granby.
