Iusco, Holian Earn Weekly Honors

This week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week have established themselves as two of the best in the county at what they do.

Monument Mountain's David Iusco was the only Berkshire County boy to win two individual events at Saturday's Berkshire Individuals in Craryville, N.Y.

Iusco won the 200-yard freestyle with a sectional qualifying time of 2 minutes, 1.77 seconds. That shaved more than 7 seconds off his seed time for Saturday's event, where he was seeded fourth in the field.

Then in the 100 backstroke, where Iusco was seeded first, he beat the field by nearly 4 seconds with a time of 1:01.81 that was just 2 seconds behind the cut to qualify for the state Division 2 tournament.

Iusco was a mainstay for the Spartans all winter, helping Monument Mountain go undefeated in its dual meet season.

Now the attention turns to next Sunday's Central/West Sectional at Springfield College.

The county's high school bowlers have one more week left in the regular season before the county championship meet on Feb. 16 in North Adams.

Going into Senior Day at Cove Lanes on Friday, everyone is chasing Emily Holian and the Lee Wildcats.

Holian boasts the league's best average with a 196 through 14 games this winter.

Her season-best game (246) and season-best two-game series (446) both ranked second on the league's honor roll.

And her 418 series this past Friday at K&M Bowl in Pittsfield helped the Wildcats to a 3-0 win that moved them into first place in the league.

That's just a slender one-point lead over second-place, Pittsfield, though. This Friday, the Generals get another crack at Lee, a 2-1 winner when the league leaders squared off at Cove Lanes back in December.
