DALTON, Mass. – Wahconah senior Madison McCarthy Wednesday took little time scoring the two points she needed to reach 1,000 for her high school career.

And she tacked on more for good measure.

McCarthy, who came into the game with 998 points in her varsity career, hit a 3-pointer from the right wing with 6 minutes, 2 seconds left in the first quarter to give her team a 6-0 lead en route to a 69-22 win over Taconic.

McCarthy could have reached the milestone a few days earlier, but after scoring her 16th point of the game – and 998th of her career – on Sunday afternoon, she put more emphasis on winning the game than claiming individual glory.

“I thought she actually distributed the ball really well today,” Wahconah coach Liz Kay said of McCarthy after that Sunday win at the Hoophall Invitational. “That’s a kid who understands the game is sort of bigger in that moment. She didn’t really force a lot of things that a lot of kids in that position would.”

McCarthy Wednesday went on to score 22 points on six 3-pointers to lead all scorers.

Danielle Hagmaier and Brooke Harrington scored 11 and 10, respectively, in the win.

Taconic was led by Melani Hamilton with nine points. Kianna Josephs hit a pair of triples and scored seven points in the loss.

The Thunder (2-11) hosts Renaissance on Friday.

Wahconah (8-3) is at Pope Francis on Friday.
