Serial killer tried in Pittsfield asking for new trial

A man tried in Berkshire Superior Court in Pittsfield in 2000 and convicted of raping and killing four Springfield women, is asking for a new trial. A lawyer for 35-year-old Alfred Gaynor says the all-white Berkshire Superior Court jury could not fairly judge the case in 2000. During the 2000 trial, more then 200 prospective jurors were interviewed for the panel and only one was an African-American. Gaynor, who is black, wanted the case tried in Boston but the judge moved it to Pittsfield saying race should not be a factor because all of the victims were black. Gaynor was accused of luring the women to their deaths with cocaine in 1997 and 1998. This report was compiled by WUHN/WUPE Radio, Pittsfield
