United Cerebral Palsy Association holds annual meeting

More than 125 people gathered for the United States Cerebral Palsy Association of Berkshire County 42 Annual Meeting and Awards on September 17, 2003 at the Crowne Plaza in Pittsfield. A cocktail/reception began at 5:30 pm with the annual meeting and presentation of awards following at 6 pm. Recognition of several individuals and groups highlighted the evening: The Fran Layden Hall of Fame Award for outstanding achievement toward obtaining personal goals and in assisting in the advancement of independence for people with disabilities was presented to Karen Lanier of North Adams. Two recipients were honored with the Ralph Levine Program Service Award: Gwen Davis of Pittsfield and Barbara Randall of Clarksburg, for their volunteer work assisting UCP in the numerous projects that they undertake. Brenda Garcia of Hinsdale, UCP's Director of Children, Adult and Family Services, received The Mitzi Scelsi Outstanding Staff Recognition Award for her dedication, persistence, loyalty and commitment to individuals assisted by UCP. David Cianflone of Pittsfield received the UCP Campaign Award for his outstanding support in assisting UCP through his on-going support, time, energy and dedication in raising operational and Capital Campaign funds. UCP's Special Consumers Awards, presented to individuals or organizations who demonstrated outstanding volunteer service through their community involvement to enhance the lives of individuals served by UCP, were presented to Paul Kakely, Sharon Myers and Brian Rice representing the Monument Mountain High School, and to Melissa Butler, Jessica Peck, Barbara Turner, John Williams and Lucille Kline of Pittsfield. All recipients were presented with a UCP paperweight. The Third Annual Beverly Pularo Memorial Scholarship Award was presented to Luke Massery of Pittsfield. Luke, a high school senior at Pittsfield High School, was awarded a $500 scholarship for his volunteer service to UCP over the past two years. Board appreciation awards were made to Maren Jacobs of Lenox for her thirty-three years of dedicated service on the Board of Directors, and to David Cianflone of Pittsfield for his fifteen years of service; and Brenda Curry and Edward Skoletsky of Pittsfield, for serving on UCP's Board of Directors for three years. UCP Staff Attendance Awards were presented to: Susan Bushika of Adams for ten years of service, Steven Casuscelli of North Adams, and Rose Suarez and Joni Thomas of Pittsfield were awarded for their five years of service. Volunteers donating 100 hours or more to UCP in 2002 received a Victory "100" Awards from UCP Nation. Those recipients where: Vinnie Adamski, Warren Buhl, Melissa Butler, David Cianflone, Kathy Corbitt, Brenda Curry, Gwen Davis, Sue DeSanty, Dave Fabiano, Melinda Haddad, Tammy Haddad, Maren Jacobs, Marsha Frye-Moquin, Shaun Murphy, Jessica Peck, Faith Piaggi, Dorothy Price, Barbara Randall, Pat Sheely, Sharon Shepard, Ed Skoletsky and Barbara Turner. Election of officers, appointment of board members and appointment of advisory board members were voted by members of the corporation. David Cianflone of Pittsfield was voted in for a two-year executive committee term as President of UCP's Board, Faith Piaggi of North Adams, as First Vice President and Assistant Treasurer and Brenda Curry of Pittsfield, as Third Vice President and Assistant Secretary. Continuing to serve a two-year in Executive Committee posts are: Maren Jacobs of Lenox, as secretary and Warren Buhl of Pittsfield, as Treasurer. Board members to serve a term to expire in 2005 are: Sue DeSanty of Clarksburg, Fuad Ameen and Shaun Murphy, of Pittsfield, Curtis O'Brien of North Adams, and new elected members Amy Kent of Lenox Dale and Kate Alexander of Pittsfield. Board members to serve a term to explore in 2006 are: Vinnie Adamski, Keith Cooper, Ed Skoletsky, Rosemary Callahan and Valerie Kemp of Pittsfield; David Woods of North Adams and newly elected member Anthony Hyte of Pittsfield. Advisory Board members are: Diane Arseneau of W. Stockbridge, Paul Brennan of Dalton, Ronald Gallagher of Williamstown, Judge Rudolph Saco of Washington, Stephen Cozzaglio, Cathy Crofut, Arthur Snide and Sue Gore of Lee, Joe Jackson, Deborah Ferro Burke and Ruth Riano of Lenox, Rhonda Johnson of Cheshire, Marsha Frye-Moquin of Gt. Barrington, June Hailer, Michael Wheelock, Fran Marinaro, Sharon Shepard, Betty Papirio, Daltrey Turner, James S. Ditello and Agnes Witkowski of Pittsfield and newly elected member, Letishia Daley of Lee. United Cerebral Palsy has a mission to advance the independence of people with disabilities. Program services include advocacy, computer and other adaptive device assistance and training assistive technology resource library, wheelchair repair clinic, loaner program of durable medical equipment, campership program, individual and family support, Winners On Wheels, a service group for children in wheelchairs, and the Berkshire Family Toy Library.

Lanesborough Fifth-Graders Win Snowplow Name Contest

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — One of the snowplows for Highway District 1 has a new name: "The Blizzard Boss."
 
The name comes from teacher Gina Wagner's fifth-grade class at Lanesborough Elementary School. 
 
The state Department of Transportation announced the winners of the fourth annual "Name A Snowplow" contest on Monday. 
 
The department received entries from public elementary and middle school classrooms across the commonwealth to name the 12 MassDOT snowplows that will be in service during the 2025/2026 winter season. 
 
The purpose of the contest is to celebrate the snow and ice season and to recognize the hard work and dedication shown by public works employees and contractors during winter operations. 
 
"Thank you to all of the students who participated. Your creativity allows us to highlight to all, the importance of the work performed by our workforce," said  interim MassDOT Secretary Phil Eng.  
 
"Our workforce takes pride as they clear snow and ice, keeping our roads safe during adverse weather events for all that need to travel. ?To our contest winners and participants, know that you have added some fun to the serious take of operating plows. ?I'm proud of the skill and dedication from our crews and thank the public of the shared responsibility to slow down, give plows space and put safety first every time there is a winter weather event."
