Hudson – The Hudson Opera House will present a reading by novelist and playwright, Lawrence Osgood at 2:00 pm on Saturday October 18th, 2003.
Mr. Osgood will read from his recently completed work, Sea, Earth, Sky: a novel of the Arctic, which takes place in the Canadian Arctic. Centered on contemporary life in an Inuit village, the experiences of a young couple on a wilderness canoe trip, and the spirit world of Inuit legend are woven together to reach a climax in a headlong narrative that reveals the several realities of the Arctic and how their interplay and collision result in changing the lives of the novel’s characters. Mr. Osgood will read the opening chapters of the book that set the scene for two of the three stories.
Mr. Osgood has taken part in several kayak expeditions on wilderness rivers in the Canadian Arctic, some of them first descents, and he lived for a year in an Inuit village on the shore of the Arctic Ocean. For ten years he worked in Canada on cultural projects for the Inuit, principally on a native language revitalization project and in developing television programming for Inuit children.
Fiction by Lawrence Osgood has been published in, among other publications, The London Magazine, The Carleton Miscellany, Pleiades, The Canadian Fiction Magazine, and a St. Martin’s Press anthology of The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror. His plays have appeared in New American Plays (Hill and Wang) and New Theatre in America (Dell) and been produced Off-Broadway and regionally. He has served on the playwrights’ committee of the Actors Studio and taught at the University of Connecticut.
As a writer, Mr. Osgood has had residencies at Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and has received research and writing grants from The Canada Council of the Arts. Mr. Osgood holds dual United States and Canadian citizenship.
Seating for the lecture is limited and reservations are recommended. The lecture is Saturday October 18th at 2p.m. The lecture is free. After the reading, Mr. Osgood will be available to answer any questions from the audience.
