Mount Greylock Boys, Girls Defend Western Mass Titles

WESTHAMPTON, Mass. – For the eighth straight season, the Mount Greylock boys track and field team reigns over Western Massachusetts.

 

And the Mounties’ girls stand atop the podium for the fourth straight year.

 

Both Mount Greylock teams defended their titles at Friday night’s Western Massachusetts Small School Division Championships at Hampshire Regional High School.

 

For the boys, Ward Bianchi helped lead the way with a win in the shot put and a second place in the javelin as the Mounties finished 16 points ahead of runner-up Pittsfield (pending the results of the pole vault, which were unavailable at 11 p.m. Friday night).

 

Mason Canata placed second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and ran a leg on Mount Greylock’s winning 4-by-100 relay quartet.

 

Mount Greylock’s girls had one of just two individual double-winners from the Berkshire County contingent at the regional championship. Rowan Apotsos won the 400 meters and the 400 hurdles.

 

The Mounties also won the girls’ 4-by-400 and 4-by-800 relays and picked up podium-topping performances from Coralea Lash-St. John (100 hurdles), Sydney Raymond (triple jump) and Kiera Kristensen (shot put).

 

They were not the only individual champions from Berkshire County.

 

Amelia Desilets defended her title in the two-mile run and Sophia Schnackenberg won the high jump for Pittsfield.

 

Berkshire County athletes placed first in all three jumping events in the boys meet.

 

Wahconah’s Cooper Calvert won high jump and triple jump as the county’s only other double-winner. And Monument Mountain’s Siddy Culbreth won the long jump.

 

For Pittsfield High, Emmanuel Anwomeah won the 400 meters and ran a leg on the Generals’ winning 4-by-400 relay quartet.

 

City rival Romeo Yankey of Taconic hit the tape first in the 200 dash.

 

And Monument’s Everett Pacheco claimed the Western Mass 800-meter title.

 

The county’s top runners, jumpers and throwers will be in action again next weekend. Pittsfield and Taconic head to the Division 5 State Championships at Bridgewater State on Friday and Sunday. The rest have the D6 State Championships on Thursday and Saturday at Westfield State.
