NORTH ADAMS — A crowd of more than 175 packed the Masonic Temple Hall on Church Street for the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition Community Recognition Awards Monday. Residents from nearly every North County community attended the ceremony, during which Mayor John Barrett III and Kathy Keeser and Sister Natalie Cain of the coalition presented awards to numerous groups and individuals who were nominated by neighbors, clients, peers, students and organizations. The following "Neighborlies" awards were given to recognize individuals or groups who have made positive contributions to the community: Neighborly Acts: Roy Burdick, Winnie Burdick, Bethany Prince, Becky Boesse, Deanna Klien, Linda Bissaillon, Margaret Curry, Virginia Jarret, Judy Lane, Ethel Roy, Norma Scott, Judy Wyman, Marilyn Boesse, Polly Birrel, Brian Fitzpatrick, Emily Gustafson, Stan Owczarski, Drew Raab, Edward Sedarbaum, Len Radin, Katharine Kennedy, Stephanie Burdick, Stephanie Bosley, Jill Burdick, Michele Rickert, Katey Ziter, Ally Plante, Britanny Rougeau, Jonelle Shea, Ed Therrien. Business/Agency support awards, to recognize the support given for community projects by agencies or businesses were given to Steeples Restaurant, Keith Randall, Leo Senecal, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts and Julie Wojcik for the North Adams Public Schools Off Campus Program. Pulling Together awards, to honor the groups of people who have worked together on a community betterment project were presented to Maggie Furlon, Lou Furlon, Lisa (Furlon) Tanner, Doris Lewis, Pauline Campbell, Millie Hunkler, Jana Hunkler Brule, Kaylyn Jetti, Marie Briscoe, Jimmy Cote, Ed Morrone, Al Bedini,, Mae Embry. Anna Gentes, Ann Marie Rogers, Priscilla Brayman, Greg Lucid, Alexandra Runnals, Meredith Newman, Jessica Sokol, Jennifer Bo, Jennifer Bell, Amanda Derosier, Tiffany Greenalgh, Will Carey, Lexi Augustine, Jennifer Ray, Torrey Baldwin, Mary Flynn, Sarah Kwak, Andrew Jang, Wesley Tjosvold,, Becky Robinson, Beta Lamda, Alice Morris, Lee Goodermote, Ellen Reyome, Ann Michalenko, Kay Allard and Cindy Boucier. Special Awards were presented to Tony Ponti for his longtime commitment to the McCann School Committee, Dean Charlotte Degen and Professors Paul LeSage and Joseph Rugutt for their dedication to students at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and Frances Bedini, for her work in making possible the Florida Senior Center.

Lanesborough Fifth-Graders Win Snowplow Name Contest

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — One of the snowplows for Highway District 1 has a new name: "The Blizzard Boss."
 
The name comes from teacher Gina Wagner's fifth-grade class at Lanesborough Elementary School. 
 
The state Department of Transportation announced the winners of the fourth annual "Name A Snowplow" contest on Monday. 
 
The department received entries from public elementary and middle school classrooms across the commonwealth to name the 12 MassDOT snowplows that will be in service during the 2025/2026 winter season. 
 
The purpose of the contest is to celebrate the snow and ice season and to recognize the hard work and dedication shown by public works employees and contractors during winter operations. 
 
"Thank you to all of the students who participated. Your creativity allows us to highlight to all, the importance of the work performed by our workforce," said  interim MassDOT Secretary Phil Eng.  
 
"Our workforce takes pride as they clear snow and ice, keeping our roads safe during adverse weather events for all that need to travel. ?To our contest winners and participants, know that you have added some fun to the serious take of operating plows. ?I'm proud of the skill and dedication from our crews and thank the public of the shared responsibility to slow down, give plows space and put safety first every time there is a winter weather event."
