MARTY LASKER LECTURE SERIES
Playing (and Staying) Together marks the third program in this series of readings, presentations, and discussions exploring collaborative and individual creations by writers and artists. Mon., July 19, 7:30pm in the upstairs gallery, faculty members of the Berkshire Music School, Suzanne Higgins, guitar, and Alla Zernitskaya, violin, will offer an informative evening of guitar and violin ensemble coaching, featuring students from the School. The Marty Lasker Lecture Series is coordinated and presented by David Giannini and Jim Soluri. Seating is on a first-come first-served basis. Refreshments available at intermission.
WORKSHOPS 2004 AT BAC!DRAWING: Introduction to Calligraphy, Sat. July 17, 10am-1pm, led by Judith Koppel, will introduce students to basic letter shapes and pen and hand positions to achieve beautiful letter and word combinations. Students should bring any calligraphic supplies they own, which could include a drawing board. Fee for members $25; non-members $30. Materials fee $5. Drawing from a Live Model continues Mondays July 19 & 26, 3-5pm. Coordinated by Ms. Koppel, participants can work in any medium. Clothed model and easels provided. Fee $6 per session; $8 non-members. Judith Koppel has taught art in grades elementary through college and exhibits paintings and drawings in MA, NJ and NY.
PAINTING: The Exploring Watercolor series led by professional watercolor artist and teacher, Karin Cook, continues Fridays, July 16 and 23, 1:15-4:15pm. July 16 features Painting Flowers, a lesson including simple and effective methods of painting flowers individually, as part of a garden and a bouquet. Plein Air Watercolor, July 23, will teach students to paint a three-dimensional subject in two dimensions using a viewfinder, value sketch and choosing a simple subject. Fee for each lesson, members $25; $30 non-members. $7 material fee per class or students can provide their own. Oriental Brush Painting continues Thurs., July 22, 10am-1pm. The 6-class series is designed to teach students key techniques and the philosophy involved in this style (other classes July 29; Aug. 5, 12 & 19). Fee $25; $30 non-members. Series of 6 classes $140; $170 non-members. Series materials fee $42 if new to class. The instructor H.M. Saffer, II, has exhibited internationally and across the US. He teaches at Norman Rockwell Museum, Berkshire Community College, Columbia Greene Community College and IS 183 Art School.
CRAFTS: Smoke-Fired Vessel, a two-part class, Fridays, July 16 & 30, 10am-1pm, teaches students to use slab and pinchpot techniques to create vessels with form and texture, using nature's inspiration. In the second session, students will meet at the instructor's Becket studio where they can experience the excitement and spontaneity of smoke-firing their creations. Instructor Donna Witruk operates East Knoll Pottery in Becket. She has taught pottery to children and adults for many years. The second in a series of 6 workshops in Rubberstamping for Greeting Cards and Scrapbooking, Rubberstamping with shaving cream and Luna Lights Paints, allows students to make beautiful, shimmery backgrounds for greeting cards, scrapbooks, calendars, and collages -- add ordinary shaving cream and the possibilities are endless! Tues., July 20, 10am-1pm. Participants can elect to take the entire series or individual classes (other classes July 27, Aug. 3, 10, 17). Session fee $25; $30 non-members. The series will be lead by Gloria Notte, a rubberstamp artist who has worked extensively with various types of paper and ink.
YOUNG PEOPLE'S PROGRAM
The final session in Joan Davidson's series, Talking in the Visual Arts takes place Mon., July 19, 9:30am-12:30pm. Ages 9-14. Tuition is free, but bring a snack! Students will work from imagination, observation, and memory to create drawings, paintings and three dimensional forms in a variety of mediums; original art work in the Becket Art Center Gallers and art reproductions will be discussed for inspiration. Students can work in groups or on an individual project. Student work will be exhibited at the Student Arts Festival. Ms. Davidson has been an artist and educator (K-College) for over 30 years. She has taught art in the New York Public Schools and Art Education to art teachers at New York University. Music for Young Families offers children (birth to 4) and parents the opportunity to sing, dance and play musically together. Tues., July 20 & 27, Aug. 3 & 10, 10:15-11am & 11:15-noon. Fee $8 per class; $40, series of 6. Tari Wheeler Roosa, a flutist, teaches at the Berkshire Music School. She has a Master's in Music Education and has studied the Musikgarten, Music Together and Phyllis Weikart methods. Art and Storytelling (ages 5-8) will continue Wed., July 21, 9:30am-12:30pm, and on July 28, 1-4pm. Fee $8 per class; $24, series. Children will read stories and respond with their own artwork. Workshop leader Dawn Greene is an artist and writer who has worked with students of all ages for almost 20 years.
Dance at the Pillow, at Blakes Barn at Jacob's Pillow. Thurs., July 22 & 29, Aug. 5 & 12, 5-6pm followed by INSIDE/OUT performances 6:30-7:30pm. Ages 5-12 accompanied by an adult. Wear loose clothing & bring a snack. Fee $8 per participant per class. Series, $36 per participant. Learn simple movements with your child, then hear the story behind the Inside/Out Performance at the Pillow. Led by Tom Truss and Amie Dowling. Truss has toured throughout the US with his own company as a solo artist and with the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange and has taught dance at the Cornish College of the Arts. Dowling is the artist director of the Dance Generators, an intergenerational performance company, and is a Creative Teaching Partner with the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
YOGA Wed. And Fri, through Sept. 3, 8-9:30 am, Sara Ross leads Yoga for Everyone. Fee $8 per class; $11 non-members; $75 for the 10-session series, $100 non-members. Bring a yoga or other mat and anticipate some fun!

Lanesborough Fifth-Graders Win Snowplow Name Contest
LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — One of the snowplows for Highway District 1 has a new name: "The Blizzard Boss."
The name comes from teacher Gina Wagner's fifth-grade class at Lanesborough Elementary School.
The state Department of Transportation announced the winners of the fourth annual "Name A Snowplow" contest on Monday.
The department received entries from public elementary and middle school classrooms across the commonwealth to name the 12 MassDOT snowplows that will be in service during the 2025/2026 winter season.
The purpose of the contest is to celebrate the snow and ice season and to recognize the hard work and dedication shown by public works employees and contractors during winter operations.
"Thank you to all of the students who participated. Your creativity allows us to highlight to all, the importance of the work performed by our workforce," said interim MassDOT Secretary Phil Eng.
"Our workforce takes pride as they clear snow and ice, keeping our roads safe during adverse weather events for all that need to travel. ?To our contest winners and participants, know that you have added some fun to the serious take of operating plows. ?I'm proud of the skill and dedication from our crews and thank the public of the shared responsibility to slow down, give plows space and put safety first every time there is a winter weather event."
