North Adams - This year marks the 50th anniversary of the North Adams Regional Hospital's Volunteer Program The hospital's 65 volunteers have been feted twice this past month. On April 4, they attended a celebratory luncheon at the hospital where they all received commemorative pins. Dr. Bruce Nash, President of NARH thanked the volunteers for their selfless commitment to the hospital. Guest speaker, Melissa Hubbard, President of the Massachusetts Association of Directors of Healthcare Volunteers, was delighted to honor the NARH volunteers on the occasion of their anniversary. On May 3, the NARH volunteers were among those who received Community Recognition Awards at the bi-annual event at the Masonic Temple in North Adams, organized by the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition. Mayor John Barrett III presented them all with their certificates. Lucy Green, NARH Volunteer Coordinator, nominated all the volunteers to receive recognition for the work they do together for the benefit of others in the community. "They are wonderful people. The hospital couldn't do without them," she said. The Men and Women in Blue - formerly the Grey Ladies, when volunteers were all women and wore grey outfits - have worked at NARH since 1955, when the volunteer program began at the hospital. There are volunteers on staff seven days a week, including holidays. They transport patients, deliver mail and flowers, discharge and admit patients, assist in offices and work in the Gift Shop, among other duties. Their ranks now include young men and women who participate in the Junior Volunteer Summer Program. The Junior Volunteers perform many of the same functions as their adult counterparts. The hospital would welcome new volunteers, both teens age 13 and over, and adults.
