44th Annual United Cerebral Palsy Association of Berkshire County Telethon

David Cianflone, President of UCP of Berkshire County has announced the 44th Annual United Cerebral Palsy Association of Berkshire County Telethon. Co-Chairing the event are Fran Marinaro and Dan Dillon. Marinaro is a longtime supporter and advisory board member of UCP and currently serves as Register of Probate in Pittsfield. This will be his eleventh year as co-chair of the event. Marinaro states: “I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with UCP. UCP is an incredibly well-run organization that does so much to assist children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. I wish everyone in the community could visit their new Assistive Technology Resource Center at 208 West Street in Pittsfield. There is nothing like it in Berkshire County. We are lucky to have such a fine agency in our community.” Dillon is returning as co-chair after a thirteen year break while he served as CEO of Berkshire United Way. Since 2005, he has been employed by Greylock Federal Credit Union as the Relationship Development Officer. Dan says “it’s exciting to be active with UCP, again to see the many innovative changes that have been made and to help the organization showcast them to the community.” Hosting the event in Pittsfield will be Jennifer Shumsky, Larry Kratka of WUPE radio, David Winchester of WSBS, “Big Mike” Patrick also of WUPE radio and Professor Presto. Hosting the event in North County will be Paul Hutchinson, Adams Town clerk and Rod Bunt, Mayor’s Office of Tourism and Cultural Development. In South County, Steve Cozzaglio, and Monument Mountain television students, lead by anchors Ebony Keefner and Matt Dellea and their advisor, Paul Kakely, will add special entertainment and guest “cut-ins” as they produce the event. The event is the major fundraiser for UCP and features children’s entertainment, educational clips about UCP services and special guests from the community. The event will take place on Sunday, January 28, 2007 live from two locations: Crowne Plaza Hotel in Pittsfield from 2 – 6 p.m. and Northern Berkshire Television Corporation in North Adams at Heritage Park from 2 – 6 p.m. It will be broadcast on a two hour taped delay on Time Warner Cable, Channel 15 by students from Monument Mountain High School at the CTSB television studio in Lee from 4 – 8 p.m. It is shown on Pittsfield Community Television/Time Warner Cable, Channel 16 from 2 – 6 p.m. and NBCTC/Time Warner Cable, Channel 15 in North County from 2 – 6 p.m. Radio celebrity David Isby will be hosting a “radio-thon” on WUPE 1110 AM/ 100.1 FM / 94.1 FM from 2 – 4 p.m. In North County, David Fabiano’s staff and volunteers of Northern Berkshire Community Television Corporation will assist volunteers and UCP staff to produce live entertainment and interviews at the Heritage Park Studio in North Adams. In Pittsfield, Bernie Avalle’s staff and volunteers of Pittsfield Community Television will be producing the event. Laurin Publishing is the major sponsor of the UCP Telethon. The theme of this fundraising event is “Kids Are the Bridge to the Future”. A goal of $34,000 has been set to offset funding needed for UCP’s Programs of Advocacy, Assistive Technology, Wheelchair Repair Clinic, Loaner Program of Durable Medical Equipment, children’s programming and support to individuals and families. 100% of funds raised remain to support these services in Berkshire County. Entertainment in Pittsfield will include the following: Farrell’s School of Irish Dance, Terpsichore Dance Center, Blafield Children’s Chorus, Albany Berkshire Ballet Junior Company, Senior Academy of the Cantarella School of Dance, Youth Alive Step, Dance and Drumline, Richmond Consolidated Jazz Band, CYC All-Star Cheerleaders, Berkshire Music School Students and high school students from Pittsfield, Taconic and St. Joseph’s High Schools who worked with Bev Krol to present a “Citizenship Scholarship fund concert this past Fall. Educational clips will include live and taped information specific to the work provided by UCP, with children and adults served by the agency as well as their family members describing the services that assist them. Interviews will be conducted with many local political representatives, including Senator Ben Downing, State Representatives Dan Bosley, “Smitty” Pignatelli, Denis Guyer and Christopher Speranzo. New Camp Is Safe Place for Children Suffering Loss to Addiction

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A new camp is offering a safe place for children who have lost a parent or guardian to addiction. 
 
Director Gayle Saks founded the nonprofit "Camp Happy Place" last year. The first camp was held in June with 14 children.
 
Saks is a licensed drug and alcohol counselor who works at the Brien Center. One of her final projects when studying was how to involve youth, and a camp came to mind. Camp had been her "happy place" growing up, and it became her dream to open her own.
 
"I keep a bucket list in my wallet, and it's right on here on this list, and I cross off things that I've accomplished," she said. "But it is the one thing on here that I knew I had to do."
 
The overnight co-ed camp is held at a summer camp in Winsted, Conn., where Saks spent her summers as a child. It is four nights and five days and completely free. Transportation is included as are many of the items needed for camping. The camp takes up to 30 children.
 
"I really don't think there's any place that exists specifically for this population. I think it's important to know, we've said this, but that it is not a therapeutic camp," Saks said.
 
She said the focus is on fun for the children, though they are able to talk to any of the volunteer and trained staff. The staff all have experience in social work, addiction and counseling, and working with children.
