NORTH ADAMS — Firefighters quickly subdued a blaze at  the former Clark Biscuit building on Ashland Street early Sunday after a passer-by reported smoke coming from the old mill.

The smoke reached to the upper floors on the north end of the vacant, 68,000-square-foot building.

A firefighter on a ladder truck broke windows to access the area on the third floor as others entered through the doorway on Ashland Street.

The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour although firefighters remained on the scene. A state fire marshal was expected to investigate the cause.

The fire apparently started near a desk on the first floor of the building near the loading dock on the north side.

The call came in at about 6 a.m.; Clarksburg and Adams sent firefighters and apparatus to the scene for mutual aide and Williamstown covered the North Adams station.

The area was still roped off with police tape around 12:30 p.m. Firefighters were cutting through the floor just inside the loading dock door and glass littered the sidewalk.

No further information was available from authorities, including how the fire started.

The building was recently purchased from the city by Arch Street Development LLC of Needham, which recently received the OK to begin renovating the structure into affordable housing apartments.

The developer began hauling trash and debris from the 68,000-square-foot structure two months ago.

Landon LeClair and Superintendent James Brosnan with Landon's parents Eric and Susan LeClair, who is a teacher at McCann.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Superintendent's Award has been presented to Landon LeClair, a senior in McCann Technical School's advanced manufacturing course.

The presentation was made last Thursday by Superintendent Jame Brosnan after Principal Justin Kratz read from teachers' letters extolling LeClair's school work, leadership and dedication.

"He's become somewhat legendary at the Fall State Leadership Conference for trying to be a leader at his dinner table, getting an entire plate of cookies for him and all his friends," read Kratz to chuckles from the School Committee. "Landon was always a dedicated student and a quiet leader who cared about mastering the content."

LeClair was also recognized for his participation on the school's golf team and for mentoring younger teammates.

"Landon jumped in tutoring the student so thoroughly that the freshman was able to demonstrate proficiency on an assessment despite the missed class time for golf matches," read Kratz.

The principal noted that the school also received feedback from LeClair's co-op employer, who rated him with all fours.

"This week, we sent Landon to our other machine shop to help load and run parts in the CNC mill," his employer wrote to the school. LeClair was so competent the supervisor advised the central shop might not get him back.
