North Adams – The MCLA Men’s Soccer team got back to .500 today with a 4-0 blanking of the Lyndon State Hornets. MCLA scored 3 first half goals and Evan Coe (Hopewell Junction, NY) and Sean Teehan (Belchertown, MA) combined for the shutout. Coe played most of the game; after making his first start of the year for the Trailblazers.
Brian Szabo (Needham, MA) got MCLA (6-6-1) on the board in the 13th minute, assisted by John McCarthy (Chicopee, MA) off a throw in down by the Hornets goal. Luke Davis (Bedford, MA) added an unassisted goal 13 minutes later and Richard Massey (Cheshire, MA) capped the 1st half scoring two minutes later off assists by Tom Murphy (Springfield, MA and Raul Escobar (Ashley Falls, MA). Escobar crossed the ball in the box, where Murphy corralled it and led Massey to the far post where he beat starting Hornets goalie Jeff Giroux (Derby, VT).
Lyndon State (6-7) played a much better second half, as the Hornets played the Trailblazers even and had a few chances of their own. Darren Roberge (Sheldon, VT) and Kyle Hessler (Middletown, RI) both had good chances sail just wide on Coe. The lone 2nd half goal was scored by Raul Escobar off a long feed by Joe Deady (Belchertown, MA). The Hornets had pushed up looking for scoring opportunities and Escobar walked in alone from about 30 yards out and beat Hornets backup goalie Ian Oliver (Westport, MA) to the far post. With both team subbing liberally in the 2nd half, MCLA senior goalkeeper Bryan Char (Middletown, NY) made an appearance at forward.
Lyndon State will host Johnson State Saturday at 3:00pm. MCLA climbs back into conference play hosting MASCAC leader Framingham State Saturday at 1:00pm
