"Skraelings on the Road" Comes to Zeitgeist Pittsfield
On Saturday, November 15, artist Robert Smith & a band of inspired beings arrive from Eastern Massachusetts to bring a very special art activity & exhibition to Zeitgeist Pittsfield.They will be displaying some of their totem-like creations, called "Skraelings," and will bring along with materials for constructing more, with help from the public.
"Skraelings," from a Nordic word meaning "not of our tribe," are totem pole like constructions incorporating basic materials and found objects to create "inspired beings & garden protectors." Many previous Skraelings made by the group have been placed in private yards, community gardens, and along bike paths and other public places.
This event is free and open to the public, beginning around 11am with a gathering to begin construction. Anyone is welcome; feel free to bring intriguing objects of wood, metal, plastic or other materials.
Beginning around 4 PM, the Gallery will begin exhibiting some examples of previous Skraelings brought to Pittsfield for the weekend, along with some of the new constructions made that day. The Skraelings will be featured alongside the complimenting work of Jonathan Donahue, "collector of the transient, otherworldly, and fleetingly gorgeous" whose work evokes "emotions old and new, memories, fantasies, dreams."
