Winter Storm Brings Snow, Sleet, Cancellations

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A Leap Day snowstorm gave local schoolchildren a snow day as it dumped up to a foot of snow across the region.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. The National Weather Service says  watch out for additional snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches. It's going to be windy and cold with sleet and icy rain forecast on Friday..

Snow began falling in the Berkshires shortly before noon on Wednesday, dropping up to 10 inches across the region.

Thursday cancellations:

 â–º Berkshire Community College is closed today. All day classes and events being held on the main campus, South County Center, North County and at the intermodal center have been canceled. Paterson field house is also closed.

 â–º Weight Watchers meeting on Thursday morning at Lenox Town Hall canceled.

 â–º Berkshire County Regional Employment Board meeting on Thursday at 8 a.m. at Berkshire Life is canceled.

â–º Richmond Library will be closed for the day. 

â–º The MIAA has rescheduled tonight's Hoosac Valley girls basketball game at Mahar for Saturday at 7 p.m.
 

â–º Meals on Wheels elderly services are closed in North Adams and Adams.

â–º The Berkshire Health Systems Bloodmobile Blood Drive at the Pittsfield Walmart is cancelled.

â–º All Saints' Handbell Choir in North Adams has cancelled practice this evening.

â–º Adult Day Health Center on Curran Highway is closed.

â–º All Western Massachusetts Girls' basketball games canceled except for Lee girls hoops

â–º BArT School has rescheduled its science fair to Tuesday, March 6, with the times to remain the same.

Kennedy Calls BCC Workforce Graduates Inspiring

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College Workforce and Community Education graduates were encouraged to be all they can be on Wednesday.
 
Graduates, families, friends, and staff gathered in Boland Theatre to celebrate around 100 graduates who completed a variety of courses.
 
They included community health worker, emergency medical technician, phlebotomy technician, registered behavior technician, AI fundamentals, Commercial Drivers License Class A and B, CompTIA Tech-plus, para educator, and English for Speakers of Other Languages.
 
College President Ellen Kennedy said it was amazing that this might be her last public speaking event before her tenure comes to an end.
 
She acknowledged the diverse reasons for their studies including career advancement and personal growth, commending their vulnerability and dedication. 
 
"Some of you explored AI, some of you improved your English speaking in really important ways, and the reason that each of you is here is because you decided to put your heart and soul to get vulnerable to do something that might have felt a little bit uncomfortable," she said. "And you did it, and we are so incredibly proud of you, and so happy to be here tonight, celebrating you."
 
Keynote speaker Shirley Edgerton, founder of Rites of Passage and Empowerment (ROPE) encouraged the graduates to reflect on their accomplishments and look forward to the future.
