The Fort Massachusetts Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has officially disbanded, and has donated $1,000 to the Hospice Fund of Northern Berkshire. The gift was presented by Barbara Coe, Jessica Pike, and Barbara Davine.
"We're very grateful to the members of the Fort Massachusetts Chapter for thinking of Hospice at this time," said Patricia M. Campbell, RN, president of the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of Northern Berkshire. "The DAR has a long and proud history in north Berkshire, and it's an honor to be the recipient of the group's generosity. We depend heavily on donations from caring individuals, and the DAR has shown us that it cares very much about quality home health care." The funds will be directed to help offset the cost of providing hospice care to the community.
Officers of the chapter said the decision to disband the group was difficult, but that without younger members joining it was not possible to carry on. At the time of the chapter's dissolution, there were 20 local members and eight from out of the area. The members can either join other chapters or become a member-at-large.
The Fort Massachusetts Chapter of the DAR was chartered in February 1897 with about 50 members, eventually growing to include more than 400 members. Many of the present members were installed more than 50 years ago, including Jessica Burnett Pike, who recently received a certificate celebrating her 65 years in the organization.
The local chapter was involved in several of the programs initiated by the DAR National Headquarters, including the "Good Citizens" program which recognized outstanding students from area high schools; and "Constitution Week" which is held each September to mark the adoption of the U.S. Constitution in 1797.
The Daughters of the American Revolution was organized in 1890 for historic, educational, and patriotic purposes. Any woman 18 years of age or older who can trace her ancestry back to a man or woman who aided in the cause of American independence, namely, the American Revolution, can be admitted to the DAR.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Superintendent's Award has been presented to Landon LeClair, a senior in McCann Technical School's advanced manufacturing course.
The presentation was made last Thursday by Superintendent Jame Brosnan after Principal Justin Kratz read from teachers' letters extolling LeClair's school work, leadership and dedication.
"He's become somewhat legendary at the Fall State Leadership Conference for trying to be a leader at his dinner table, getting an entire plate of cookies for him and all his friends," read Kratz to chuckles from the School Committee. "Landon was always a dedicated student and a quiet leader who cared about mastering the content."
LeClair was also recognized for his participation on the school's golf team and for mentoring younger teammates.
"Landon jumped in tutoring the student so thoroughly that the freshman was able to demonstrate proficiency on an assessment despite the missed class time for golf matches," read Kratz.
The principal noted that the school also received feedback from LeClair's co-op employer, who rated him with all fours.
"This week, we sent Landon to our other machine shop to help load and run parts in the CNC mill," his employer wrote to the school. LeClair was so competent the supervisor advised the central shop might not get him back.
