Williams College has reached tentative agreement with film producers Lakeshore Entertainment Group for shooting to take place on the Williams campus for two or three days in late May.
The film, "The Human Stain" stars Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, Ed Harris, and Gary Sinise. The director is Robert Benton, whose films include "Kramer vs. Kramer." Hopkins and Kidman will be part of the filming in Williamstown.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Philip Roth, the film is scheduled for release by Miramax late fall.
Filming will occur outdoors and indoors on campus and at the Post Office on Spring Street. Through a process yet to be established, the production company will hire local extras to portray students and professors.
The college's Conference Office is handling arrangements on campus.
"People are already getting excited about this visit by Hollywood," said Helen Ouellette, vice president for administration and treasurer. "The filming should also provide a real boost to the region. It will bring a large crew to town for several days and raise the visibility of the Berkshires worldwide."
The novel, published in 2000, is set at fictional "Athena College," described as a liberal arts institution in the Berkshires. With the Pulitzer Prize winning "American Pastoral" and "I Married a Communist," it comprises a trilogy of Roth novels focused on life in America since World War II.
The last major film shot on the Williams campus was "A Change of Seasons" in 1980. It also starred Anthony Hopkins along with Shirley MacLaine and Bo Derek.

McCann Recognizes Superintendent Award Recipient

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Superintendent's Award has been presented to Landon LeClair, a senior in McCann Technical School's advanced manufacturing course.
The presentation was made last Thursday by Superintendent Jame Brosnan after Principal Justin Kratz read from teachers' letters extolling LeClair's school work, leadership and dedication.
"He's become somewhat legendary at the Fall State Leadership Conference for trying to be a leader at his dinner table, getting an entire plate of cookies for him and all his friends," read Kratz to chuckles from the School Committee. "Landon was always a dedicated student and a quiet leader who cared about mastering the content."
LeClair was also recognized for his participation on the school's golf team and for mentoring younger teammates.
"Landon jumped in tutoring the student so thoroughly that the freshman was able to demonstrate proficiency on an assessment despite the missed class time for golf matches," read Kratz.
The principal noted that the school also received feedback from LeClair's co-op employer, who rated him with all fours.
"This week, we sent Landon to our other machine shop to help load and run parts in the CNC mill," his employer wrote to the school. LeClair was so competent the supervisor advised the central shop might not get him back.
