The bone-chilling winter is looming over a lot of shoulders. The shovels, heavy coats, mittens, scarfs, and hats are being dusted off in preparation for the dark winter season. What better way to send off the season by doing these last-call activities before it is too late. Especially as this unusual mild autumn weather is expected to continue for another week.

Athletic Activities

Berkshire County has a wide range of activities that people can do to stay active in every season. In the fall taking a hike on the many hiking trails is an absolute must. There are so many places in the area with hiking trails that lead to magnificent views.

Hiking

When winter comes, hiking becomes better in theory rather than practice. Your feet get cold and the sharp wind takes your breath away even more than the physical exertion. In the fall, hiking is a breeze. The cool air balances your temperature, the fallen leaves crunch beneath your feet, and the earthy scent of autumn fills the air.

Don't know where to hike" Here are some recommendations:

Olivia's Overlook — located in West Stockbridge in the center of the 734-acre Yokun Ridge South reserve. Although the view is beautiful immediately when pulling in, it has trails that also lead to outstanding views to overlook the mountains.

Mount Greylock — Although the roads up to Mount Greylock are closed, the trails up to the monument are open all season. Take a 2.4-mile hike up the Thunderbolt Trail, which is the steepest and shortest route to the highest point in Massachusetts. Parking lots available on Thiel and Gould roads in Adams.

Walking/Biking

If you're interested in something less strenuous, take a nice calming walk to take in the final bit of sun Mother Nature will gift us before days shorten.

Not sure where to go? Here are some recommendations:

Ashuwillticook Rail Trail — This paved bike path runs through Pittsfield, Lanesborough, Cheshire and Adams with magnificent views along more than a dozen miles. The path is perfect for running, biking, walking, longboarding, and wildlife watching. Parking lots and restrooms are available at selected locations along the way.

Glen Meadow Loop —This stoned path is one of the popular paths for people looking for a quiet and easy walk. The walk through the Greylock Glen in Adams on average only takes a little over a half hour to complete and is great for wildlife watching. There are also beautiful views of Mount Greylock along the path.

Outdoor Dining

After a long day of walking, hiking, biking, or whatever activity your heart desires, take some time to refuel at one of the many outdoor dining establishments in the Berkshires.

When winter comes, restaurants close their patios and pack up the chairs and tables until the return of the warmer season. Take some time to enjoy the sun while it still shines and look out at some amazing views or just enjoy the experience of being outdoors.

Don’t know where to go to eat. Here are some recommendations:

Golden Eagle Restaurant — Enjoy steak or some classic American entrees while gazing out at a magnificent view. This restaurant is located on the historic Hairpin Turn on Route 2 and has balcony seating that overlooks the view of Clarksburg and North Adams. More information here

Trail House Kitchen & Bar — Cozy up around a gas fire pit and enjoy some farm-to-table American cuisine. Also located along the Mohawk Trail on Route 2 near the Williamstown and North Adams line, this restaurant has a deck and two outside gas fireplaces, and a view of the mountains. More information here

Outdoor Shopping

Take a walk down one of the many diverse main streets in the Berkshires that feature small local businesses, retail stores, theaters, and more. Soon snow will fill the streets and walking the sidewalks while window shopping won't be as entertaining.

Not sure of where to shop. Here are some recommendations:

Downtown Great Barrington — Take a walk down the historic streets of Great Barrington, such as Railroad Street, that feature restaurants, bars, shops, galleries in rustic brick buildings.

Downtown North Adams — Walking the streets of downtown North Adams offers a variety of shopping experiences and other activities. Peruse through diverse stores including antique shops, and game, plant and clothing stores. If you are not in the mood to shop, stop at one of the many galleries or museums.

Downtown Pittsfield — Downtown Pittsfield offers a variety of shopping opportunities including candle stores, tourist stations, antique shops, a metaphysical retailer, clothing, and more. After shopping experience some of the area's cultural venues including the Berkshire Museum, Barrington Stage, Colonial Theatre, or the Berkshire Athenaeum, the largest public library in the county.

Lee Premium Outlets — For shoppers more interested in larger retail options, visit the Lee Premium Outlets, located at 17 Premium Outlets Blvd., to shop in many name brand stores including Aeropostale, American Eagle Outfitters, Banana Republic Factory Store, Calvin Klein, Coach, and many more.

Friday Front Porch Feature: A Charming House Like New

By Breanna SteeleiBerkshires Staff

The home prior to renovations.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. Are you looking for a newly renovated home with great space? Then this might be the perfect fit for you!

Our Friday Front Porch is a weekly feature spotlighting attractive homes for sale in Berkshire County. This week, we are showcasing 100 Autumn Drive.

This three-bedroom, two-bathroom split level was built in 1965 and is 1,396 square feet on 0.32 acres.

The house was completely renovated recently. It includes a one-car garage, and comes with appliances including a dishwasher and stove/oven, and other major appliances.

The house is listed for $359,500.

We spoke with owners Michael Zeppieri and Chris Andrews, who did the renovations. Zeppieri is an agent with Alton and Westall Real Estate Agency.

What was your first impression when you walked into the home?

Zeppieri: I purchased this home to do a full renovation flip and saw tremendous potential in this mid-century split level home that had not been updated since it was built in the 1960s, in a great North Adams neighborhood.

Andrews: The house was a much different house when we first purchased it in 2022 (photo attached is from about 2010.)  The interior was painted all in dark colors and we brightened it up with neutral colors. The transformation makes you feel like you are in a totally different house.

What were the recent renovations, any standout design features?

Zeppieri: The house has had a complete reconfiguration including new kitchen with high-end appliances, ceramic tiled baths, hardwood floors, new windows and roof ... just to name a few.  All a buyer has to do is move in and enjoy.

Andrews: Yes, we renovated the entire house.  New windows, new roof, all new custom black gutter system, new blacktop driveway, hardwood floors were installed through out the house. New kitchen and bathrooms as well as painting the exterior and interior of the house.  New paver patio in the back yard.

What kind of buyer would this home be ideal for?

Zeppieri: The buyer for this home could be a first-time homebuyer or a retiree ... the location is close to attractions in North Adams ... and the property is located in Autumn Heights, which is a very small residential development with several long-term owners.

Andrews: This home is truly ideal for a variety of buyers. Whether a first-time homebuyer, a small family or even someone looking to downsize from a larger home.

What do you think makes this property stand out in the current market?

Zeppieri: The location, price and move-in condition of this home make it a true market leader in the North Adams Market.

Andrews: This house is completely renovated and in a desirable location of North Adams. The natural light in the home really makes the interior pop. And with all the upgrades the home stays quite cool in the summer months.

Do you know any unique stories about the home or its history?

Zeppieri: This home was built for the Gould family in 1969 and they lived there till 2010. It was always a family home during that time in which the Goulds had two children ... and Virgina Gould managed Mohawk Forest Apartments and was a very active resident of North Adams.

Andrews: Built in about 1965.

What do the current owners love about this home?

Zeppieri: As the current owner it was a fun project to transform this home and get it ready for its next adventure with a new family to enjoy for many years.

Andrews: No one has lived in the house since we purchased the home. The new owners would be the first to live in the house since the renovations have been completed.

What would you say to a buyer trying to imagine their life in this space?

Andrews: I would suggest seeing the house either on a sunny day or at twilight to really get a vision of how special the home feels.
