Local Veterans Replace St. Stans Flag and Pole

The new pole was installed over Labor Day Weekend.

ADAMS, Mass. — Members of Adams American Legion Post 60, North Adams American Legion Post 125, and the American Legion Riders installed a new pole and hoisted a new flag at St. Stanislaus Kostka School over Labor Day Weekend.

"Everyone in our community has been talking about the new flag and pole," said St. Stans Principal Chris Bersaw. "We are very excited to have it and grateful to the American Legion."

Bersaw said the previous pole was blown over during a severe winter storm last year.

"We were looking into options to replace it when Jill reached out to us with the generous offer from the American Legion to purchase a new pole and flag for us," he said, referring to Jill Naugle of the American Legion Riders.

Post 60 purchased the pole and flag, installing them with assistance from Post 125 members and the Legion Riders.

Bersaw noted that the eighth-grade class has been assigned the duty of caring for the flag as part of their civics studies this year.

"St. Stan's has deep respect and appreciation for our nation's veterans and this gift helps our students recognize the importance of our flag and history," Bersaw said.

Memorial Building Owner Seeks Name Change

ADAMS, Mass. — The selectmen tabled a request from the owner of the Memorial Building, who wants to change his company's name to qualify for more grant funding.

During Wednesday's Select Board meeting, the proposal was initially approved but later tabled after a resident urged the board to have town counsel review the documents.

According to Town Administrator Nicholas Caccamo, the owner, Michael Mackin, is seeking to change the name from Memorial School Redevelopment LLC to 30 Columbia Redevelopment LLC, which he said would make him eligible for more grant funding.

In a follow-up with iBerkshires.com, Mackin said the property must be twice removed from town ownership to be eligible for certain grant funding.

Mackin was not present at Wednesday's board meeting, but Caccamo explained that the change would make Mackin eligible for the Berkshire Brownfields Revolving Loan Program to help fund hazardous-material abatement and the removal of heating oil tanks.

Caccamo told the board the change is solely creating a delineation of ownership and does not change anything in the lease, building permits, lease agreement with the town, or any work planned or in progress.

The town has signed a lease to use the building once renovations are complete and the space is usable, which it currently is not, Caccamo said.
