North Adams Label Shopper Reopens in New Location

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — In a matter of days, Label Shopper in the L-shaped mall moved across the parking lot into new quarters and hung out a grand opening sign.

"Oh my, it's gorgeous!" said a customer walking into the bright, airy and expanded discount clothing store.

Label Shopper, a subsidiary of Peter Harris Clothes of Latham, N.Y., has been in downtown North Adams since 2009. It closed on Monday to move into the former Gordman's space in the former Kmart plaza.

Gordmans briefly replaced Peebles until the parent company of the two brands declared bankruptcy and closed its stores in 2020. The space has been vacant until now.

Label Shopper's grand opening was on Thursday morning and district manager Angie Ciccone said the store had been busy, and "we're expecting the weekend to be busy."

The store carries name and designer brand clothing for women, children and men, women's shoes, accessories and some home decor. Ciccone noted the space was double the size of the former location.

"We are are thrilled to be a part of the North Adams community. We will continue to offer the most popular designer brands at the best possible price," said Kathy Boedecker, director of operations, via email. "We had the opportunity to take over the old Gordman's space in Parkade Plaza and we seized it.

"The larger space will allow us to offer a broader selection of missy, men's, plus and kids clothing at the value our North Adams customer has come to love from us."

The store is open 9 to 8 weekdays, 10 to 6 on Saturdays and noon to 5 on Sundays.

North Adams Student Struck by Bicyclist at Bus Stop

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A North Adams Public Schools student was sent to the hospital with minor injuries after being hit by a bicyclist at a bus stop.

According to police, the incident happened around 8:14 Friday morning near the intersection of Hudson Street and Eagle Street.

An adult was riding a bicycle southbound on Eagle Street down a steep decline. The bicycle's brakes were not working, and the rider was unable to stop.

A group of children was waiting for the school bus at the intersection when the bicyclist struck one of the students.

First responders were on scene, and other adults present at the bus stop also intervened.

The child sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released later that morning.

The bicyclist was charged with operating a bicycle to endanger. Police confirmed the bicycle was not an e-bike.

The school district sent families an email stating that students riding the Brayton B2 bus and the Colgrove C2 bus witnessed the accident. Staff checked in with each student witness, and school adjustment counselors provided support for students throughout the day.
