John Barrett and Andrew Fitch Candidates Forum On Aug. 13

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. The Williamstown League of Women Voters will be hosting a forum for contending candidates for the 1st Berkshire District of the Massachusetts House of Representatives at 7pm on Thursday, Aug. 13, at the lower level auditorium of Williams College Paresky Center, 39 Chapin Hall Drive in Williamstown.

Incumbent John Barrett will face challenger Andrew Fitch in the Democratic Primary on Sept. 1.

Barrett has been serving as a state rep since November 2017 and, before that, was mayor of North Adams from 1984 until 2009.

A native of Massachusetts, Andrew Fitch moved to North Adams five years ago and is serving his second term on the North Adams City Council. A small business owner and owns Steeple City Social on Eagle Street in North Adams, a bakery, cafe and cocktail bar.

Berkshire County's 1st District includes Adams, Cheshire, Clarksburg, Florida, Hancock, Hinsdale, Lanesborough, New Ashford, North Adams, Peru, Savoy, Williamstown and Windsor.

Williamstown Child Dies in Collision with Motor Vehicle

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A 7-year-old Williamstown child died Friday evening after a collision with a motor vehicle at the intersection of Main Street and Buxton Hill Road, the Berkshire County District Attorney's Office announced on Saturday morning.
 
Neither the child nor the driver were identified in the release. The child, Max Rothschild of Williamstown, was formally identified by the DA's Office on Monday. The driver has not been identified and the incident remains under investigation.
 
The vehicle was traveling east on Main Street, and the child, riding a bicycle, was headed down Buxton Hill Road toward Main, according to the DA.
 
"Preliminary information suggests that the bicyclist unintentionally entered Main Street where they were struck by the involved vehicle," the news release read.
 
The child died at the scene of the accident, the news release said.
 
"The driver of the vehicle was not impaired by alcohol or drugs," the news release said. "The bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision."
 
The investigation remains active.
