Nearly 100 Compete in Lee's Main Street Mile

LEE, Mass. -- Noah Hassmer and Michaela Grady were the top male female finishers at the Main Street Mile on Saturday.

Hassmer ran a time of 5 minutes, 2.5 seconds to pace the field at the event, part of the Founders Day celebration in town and a fund-raiser for the Lee Middle and High School cross country teams.

Hassmer finished 27 seconds ahead of runner-up Sam Harding.

Pittsfield's Grady placed sixth overall and first among the female runners, hitting the finish line in 5:55.69.

Ninety-six runners finished the event.

Winter Garden Preparation Talk Set at Stamford Library

STAMFORD, Vt. — The Stamford Community Library will present a program on "Putting Your Garden to Bed for Winter" on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m.

The hourlong program, presented by longtime plant expert Pam Tworig, will cover preparing perennial beds for winter, and protecting plants from winter weather and damage from animals. She will also discuss the benefits of, types, and characteristics of different plants for winter interest in the garden.

The informal event will allow plenty of time for Q&A. Attendees are encouraged to bring their gardening questions.

Tworig is currently a Realtor with Bishop West Real Estate. Previously, she and her late husband, Steve, operated North Branch Landscape Co. and a tree and shrub nursery in Stamford for over 35 years.

The library is at 986 Main Road. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.
