The Benefits of Working Out After 45: Why It’s Never Too Late to Get Stronger, Healthier, and Feel Better

By Ultimate Body FactoryPrint Story | Email Story
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Turning 45 is an opportunity to take a closer look at your health and the habits that will shape the years ahead. While aging brings natural changes to the body, losing strength, energy, and mobility doesn't have to be inevitable.

In fact, regular exercise may be one of the best investments you can make in your long-term health, independence, and quality of life.

Whether you're returning to the gym after years away, looking to lose weight, or simply hoping to feel better every day, it's never too late to start making progress. At Ultimate Body Factory (UBF), we believe fitness should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, experience, or starting point.

1. Maintain Muscle and Everyday Strength

As we age, we naturally tend to lose muscle mass and strength, especially when we lead a sedentary lifestyle. Over time, this can make everyday activities like carrying groceries, climbing stairs, and getting up from the floor more challenging.

Strength training helps combat this decline by building and maintaining muscle. Weight machines, free weights, resistance exercises, and bodyweight movements can all help you stay strong and capable.

You don't have to become a bodybuilder to benefit from lifting weights. The goal might simply be to move more comfortably, keep up with your family, or maintain your independence as you get older.

At UBF, you'll find equipment and training options to help you work toward your goals at your own pace. The important thing is to start where you are and stay consistent.

2. Support Your Heart, Bones, and Joints
Exercise does more than build muscle. It also plays an important role in maintaining cardiovascular health, supporting bone density, and improving physical function.

Activities like walking, cycling, and other forms of cardio help improve endurance and support heart health. Resistance training can help maintain bone strength and strengthen the muscles that support your joints.

A balanced fitness routine should include both strength training and cardiovascular exercise. You don't need to spend hours working out or push yourself to exhaustion to see benefits.

If you're managing arthritis, a previous injury, or another health concern, choosing appropriate exercises and progressing gradually can help you stay active safely.

3. Manage Weight and Improve Energy

Many adults notice changes in body composition, energy, and weight as they get older. Changes in muscle mass, sleep, stress, hormones, and daily activity can all play a role.

Combining strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and balanced nutrition can help manage body fat while preserving muscle. And remember, progress isn't measured by the scale alone. Better endurance, improved strength, increased energy, and clothes fitting differently can all be meaningful signs of improvement.

Exercise can also help you feel more energetic over time. As your fitness improves, everyday activities may require less effort, and regular physical activity can support better sleep.

If you've been feeling sluggish, start small. A walk, a manageable workout, or a few sessions at the gym each week can be a great first step.

4. Improve Mental Health and Confidence

The benefits of exercise aren't just physical. Regular activity can help reduce stress, improve mood, and support mental well-being.

There's also something rewarding about setting a goal and working toward it. Maybe you want to lift a little more weight, walk a little farther, or simply follow through on a commitment to yourself.

Those small victories build confidence.

At UBF, fitness isn't just about changing how you look. It's about helping you feel stronger, more capable, and more confident in everyday life. You don't need to have years of gym experience or a specific physique in mind to belong in a gym.

Your goals are your own, and your progress should reflect them.

5. Protect Your Independence for the Years Ahead
One of the most valuable benefits of exercise after 45 is maintaining the ability to live life on your terms.

Strength, balance, mobility, and endurance all contribute to staying active and independent as you age. A well-rounded routine can include resistance training, cardio, balance exercises, and mobility work.

For most adults, a good long-term target is at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, along with strength training at least twice weekly. Your starting point may be different, and that's okay. Build gradually and find a routine that fits your life.

The goal isn't to turn back the clock. It's to give yourself the best opportunity to enjoy the years ahead.

Getting Started: You Don't Have to Do It All at Once

If you haven't exercised in a while, walking into a gym can feel intimidating. You might wonder where to begin, what equipment to use, or whether you're too far behind to make a difference.

The truth is that everyone starts somewhere.

Begin with manageable workouts, learn proper technique, allow time for recovery, and focus on consistency rather than perfection. As your fitness improves, you can gradually increase the difficulty of your workouts.

At Ultimate Body Factory in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, we welcome people at different stages of their fitness journeys, from beginners taking their first steps to experienced lifters working toward new goals. Our focus is helping people find a path that works for them.

If you have a chronic medical condition, significant joint problems, or have been inactive for a long time, consider consulting a healthcare professional before beginning vigorous exercise.

Pittsfield Council OKs Funds for Plow Truck; Refers Council Pay Recommendation

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Winter is right around the corner, and Pittsfield plans to purchase a vehicle to increase its snow-plowing capacity.

On Tuesday, the City Council approved the transfer of $200,000 from the Public Works Stabilization Fund for equipment. The Department of Public Services will purchase a one-ton truck equipped with an all-season body, snowplow, wing, and spreader.

Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales said it is something the department would like to have for supervision and expanding its work.

"We need this piece of equipment to have a supervisor be able to go on the mains with a wing plow and assist on that as needed, and be able to pick up that wing and go to a neighborhood street and be able to assist with snow plowing in a neighborhood street," he explained.

"And at the same time be able to jump throughout the city because he's supervising as well, making sure that there's volume."

A comparable truck is included in Pittsfield's capital plan.

These vehicles normally need to be ordered 10 to 12 months ahead of delivery, but Morales said Pittsfield identified one that can be expedited; he did not say how quickly.

"Approving funding now gives us the best chance of having the truck built and in service for the coming snow season," he wrote in a communication to the council.
