Congressman John Olver this week announced that he has nominated 21 high school students from the 1st Congressional District to U.S. Military Academies, including students from Adams and Dalton.
The military academies include West Point, the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, and the Merchant Marines Academy. Each candidate must receive nomination from a federal official in order to be considered by the academy’s admissions office.
" I am very impressed with the individuals I nominated," said Olver, who represents the First Congressional District. "I admire their commitment both to their country and to continuing their education."
In order to be considered, candidates must be between the ages of 17 and 23, single with no legal dependents, and must have a strong academic record. The various academies have differing additional requirements. Generally, beyond submitting a written application, nominees must also pass a rigorous physical aptitude test in order to be considered.
"Although this nomination does not necessarily mean admission, these students should be very proud of their accomplishments. I am pleased that these communities have produced such a promising crop of young people," Olver added.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Berkshire Food Project is closed Monday because of a power outage early in the morning.
"We are unable to get proper electricity and heat to the building," according to Executive Director Matthew Alcombright. "We hope that this can be resolved and be open tomorrow."
