Turtle Island Quartet to perform in Troy

Print Story | Email Story
Troy, NY - On Saturday, March 1 at 8 P.M., a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings will take the stage at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has called them “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground—authentic and passionate--a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today.” Turtle Island String Quartet has been on a musical journey since the mid 1980s, through forays into Folk and Bluegrass, Swing Jazz, Be-Bop, Classical Indian forms, Funk and R&B, New Age, Rock and Hip-Hop, Bossa Nova and Salsa. At the same time, they continue to revive improvisational and compositional chamber traditions that have not been explored by string players for nearly 200 years. This performance, entitled “Blue in Green” is dedicated to the music of Miles Davis, the great jazz trumpeter and relentless iconoclast. The Turtle Island String Quartet uses the legendary best-selling jazz recording of all time, Kind of Blue, as the centerpiece for a program that explores the deep roots from which this masterpiece grew, as well as the subsequent blossoming of musical genres that followed. A word about Miles Davis … He began as a teenage Juilliard Conservatory dropout who, along with his mentors, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, shook the jazz world to its core with the explosion of bebop in the forties. With extensive conservatory training, each Turtle Island member is accomplished in improvisation, composition and arranging. Grammy-nominated David Balakrishnan (violin, baritone violin) is the founder, leader and primary composer/arranger of the group. Balakrishnan has produced several recordings, a movie soundtrack, and collaborations with groups like the Modern Jazz Quartet and the Manhattan Transfer. He has also received numerous composing grants. He has recently completed a 6-year term on the Board of Directors of Chamber Music America. Evan Price (violin) has performed with some of the masters of fiddle lore including Stephane Grappelli, Johnny Frigo, Claude “Fiddler” Williams, Johnny Gimble, Mark O’Connor, Buddy Spicher, Vassar Clements and Alasdair Fraser. He has won several fiddle championships. In addition to performing with TISQ, Evan is an active performer with other Bay Area groups, most notably the Hot Club of San Francisco, a gypsy swing band. Danny Seidenberg (viola) has performed with the American Ballet Theater, New York City Opera, American Symphony Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony, Orchestra of St. Lukes, New York City Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Philharmonia Virtuosi, Solisti New York, Dance Theater of Harlem, Soviet Émigré Orchestra, as well as with many Broadway shows. He has toured, performed and recorded with Steve Reich, the Village People, Liza Minelli, Tony Bennett, James Brown, Richie Havens, and Led Zeppelin. He is also an accomplished pianist. With Turtle Island, Danny has become a performer, composer, arranger and jazz educator of international stature. Mark Summer (cello) is regarded as one of the outstanding jazz cellists of our time, thanks to his phenomenal percussion and pizzicato techniques. Mark performs with the Chamber Symphony of San Francisco, the Oakland Symphony, the Oakland Ballet and contemporary music ensemble Earplay. He has been featured in Strings and Bass Player magazine and has published two pieces for solo cello. He has recorded on numerous motion picture soundtracks and performed and recorded with Linda Ronstadt, singer Toni Childs, Jeff Tamelier of Tower of Power, saxophonist Kirk Whalum and guitarist Will Ackerman. Turtle Island String Quartet has a phenomenal international appeal, particularly in Europe where chamber music and sporting events go hand in hand. The group continues to hone its skills through unusual and endemic “re-compositions” of works by the “old masters”, through the development of repertory by some of today’s cutting edge young composers, through performances and recordings with major symphonic ensembles, and through a determined educational commitment. Reserved seats for Turtle Island String Quartet are $24 and $21 and may be purchased by calling the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Box Office at (518) 273-0038. The Music Hall Box Office opens one hour prior to the performance. Otherwise, Box Office operations are handled at its business office at 7 State Street, Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on show days only. Tickets can also be purchased online and The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall’s full season schedule can be viewed at www.troymusichall.org. Friday Front Porch Feature: A Charming House Like New

By Breanna SteeleiBerkshires Staff

The home prior to renovations.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. Are you looking for a newly renovated home with great space? Then this might be the perfect fit for you!

Our Friday Front Porch is a weekly feature spotlighting attractive homes for sale in Berkshire County. This week, we are showcasing 100 Autumn Drive.

This three-bedroom, two-bathroom split level was built in 1965 and is 1,396 square feet on 0.32 acres.

The house was completely renovated recently. It includes a one-car garage, and comes with appliances including a dishwasher and stove/oven, and other major appliances.

The house is listed for $359,500.

We spoke with owners Michael Zeppieri and Chris Andrews, who did the renovations. Zeppieri is an agent with Alton and Westall Real Estate Agency.

What was your first impression when you walked into the home?

Zeppieri: I purchased this home to do a full renovation flip and saw tremendous potential in this mid-century split level home that had not been updated since it was built in the 1960s, in a great North Adams neighborhood.

Andrews: The house was a much different house when we first purchased it in 2022 (photo attached is from about 2010.)  The interior was painted all in dark colors and we brightened it up with neutral colors. The transformation makes you feel like you are in a totally different house.

What were the recent renovations, any standout design features?

Zeppieri: The house has had a complete reconfiguration including new kitchen with high-end appliances, ceramic tiled baths, hardwood floors, new windows and roof ... just to name a few.  All a buyer has to do is move in and enjoy.

Andrews: Yes, we renovated the entire house.  New windows, new roof, all new custom black gutter system, new blacktop driveway, hardwood floors were installed through out the house. New kitchen and bathrooms as well as painting the exterior and interior of the house.  New paver patio in the back yard.

What kind of buyer would this home be ideal for?

Zeppieri: The buyer for this home could be a first-time homebuyer or a retiree ... the location is close to attractions in North Adams ... and the property is located in Autumn Heights, which is a very small residential development with several long-term owners.

Andrews: This home is truly ideal for a variety of buyers. Whether a first-time homebuyer, a small family or even someone looking to downsize from a larger home.

What do you think makes this property stand out in the current market?

Zeppieri: The location, price and move-in condition of this home make it a true market leader in the North Adams Market.

Andrews: This house is completely renovated and in a desirable location of North Adams. The natural light in the home really makes the interior pop. And with all the upgrades the home stays quite cool in the summer months.

Do you know any unique stories about the home or its history?

Zeppieri: This home was built for the Gould family in 1969 and they lived there till 2010. It was always a family home during that time in which the Goulds had two children ... and Virgina Gould managed Mohawk Forest Apartments and was a very active resident of North Adams.

Andrews: Built in about 1965.

What do the current owners love about this home?

Zeppieri: As the current owner it was a fun project to transform this home and get it ready for its next adventure with a new family to enjoy for many years.

Andrews: No one has lived in the house since we purchased the home. The new owners would be the first to live in the house since the renovations have been completed.

What would you say to a buyer trying to imagine their life in this space?

Andrews: I would suggest seeing the house either on a sunny day or at twilight to really get a vision of how special the home feels.
