NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The U.S. Small Business Administration will hold a Business Recovery Expo on Thursday, May 6, on the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts campus.

The event will include a panel discussion with SBA Massachusetts District Director Robert H. Nelson, Mayor Richard J. Alcombright, Berkshire Chamber of Commerce President Michael Supranowicz, and Andre M. Porter, executive director of the Massachusetts Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

The panel will be followed by an exposition; there will be two free workshops on business financing and SBA programs after the expo.

The Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for "business person of the year."

If you know someone who fits the criteria, send the Chamber the person's name, along with a few paragraphs about why you've nominated him or her (the Chamber won't accept a nomination without explanation), to ed@rnetworx.com by Friday, April 30.

The criteria are:

Personal Qualities: integrity, entrepreneurial ability, personal contributions outside of immediate business interest, role model to other business people;  leadership and vision

Managerial Skills: leadership quality, productivity, maintaining a positive work  environment, successful performance, fullfilling organization's goals and mission

Contribution to the Southern Berkshires: policies and projects that have a positive impact on the community, collaboration between business and community, business support of the community.

Last year the Chamber Board selected David J. Bruce, president and chief executive officer at Lee Bank. Bruce has held his current position at Lee Bank since 1989 and is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the bank and its holding company Berkshire Financial Services.

About 250 people attended the job fair sponsored by the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce at the Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield on Thursday. That figure was lower than last year — during the depths of the recession — but  the good news was that the number of employers and employment resource services was up.

Christine Hoyt, the chamber's director of programs and events, said the turnout was good on both sides. "We had more than 40 employers, a little more than last year," she said. "Employers were satisfied with the good quality of the job seekers."

The excellent weather, along with the economy's slow emergence from the financial crisis, may have played a factor in the about average attendance, said Hoyt.

Employers ranging from LTI Smartglass, Interprint, Williams College and Norman Rockwell were on hand offering opportunities for the right candidates. iBerkshires' sister site, BerkshireJobs.com, also had a booth.

A local custom printer is partnering with a technology startup to offer customers in Berkshire and Hampden counties a new way to publish their printed material online.

Excelsior Printing Co.  in North Adams will be the exclusive provider of Flip Page Publishing's 3D publishing technology. Excelsior will be able to offer customers a three-dimensional version of printed collateral on their Web sites through a plug-in created by Flip Page and delivered through Excelsior.

It will allow customers to "effectively communicate in cross-media channels," said David Crane, Excelsior's owner and president.

The technology allows the read to zoom in and out, print and share documents as well as, of course, "flip" the pages. Flip Page Publishing is based in Branford, Ontario.
 
"The Massachusetts marketplace is a new venture for Flip Page Publishing and we feel it is full of opportunity," said Flip Page's President Brent Palmer.

Excelsior has been in business for 118 years and is a provider of custom and innovative print and distribution programs throughout North America. Excelsior became Berkshire County's first Forest Stewardship Council certified "green" printer in 2008.

Allen Jezouit has big plans for Berkshire Direct Inc. Jezouit and a partner (who won't be revealed until next week, he says) purchased the 9-year-old direct-mail company from the Storey family last week.

"We plan on expanding our marketing services to better serve our existing clients and to help local and regional businesses, organizations and nonprofits with their marketing initiatives," said Jezouit.

Jezouit was brought on as vice president of business development last September after four years as marketing director for Redstone Properties and more than 18 years in sales and marketing with Praxair Inc. Since his arrival, he's been moving the company's direct-mail foundation to incorporate multiple platforms for local and national clients.

New services include Web site design and development, Web marketing, mail-fulfillment, e-mail marketing, search engine optimization, social media services, video production, television commercials, and a full-service sales and marketing consultancy. The team will provide new types of leads for businesses that once relied on newspapers and direct mail.

"We haven't done much advertising yet, it's all word of mouth, and we're swamped," said Jezouit on Tuesday.
 

Berkshire Direct is an outgrowth of Storey Communication's Gardener's Marketplace, which operated for more than 36 years. Storey Communications, founded by Martha and John Storey of Williamstown, sold the publishing company to Workman Publishing; Berkshire Direct was operated by them and then their son, Matt. The Storeys will continue to collaborate on some projects but Matt Storey will no longer be involved.

Jezouit said he and his yet-to-be-named partner have "both worked for big companies and we're bringing that expertise to small companies."

Local clients include Northern Berkshire Healthcare, MountainOne Financial, Williams College, Williamstown Chamber of Commerce, Williamstown Youth Center, Ioka Valley Farm, Williamstown Physical Therapy, Boston Investor Communications Agency, and New England Landscape and Aquatics. Also on the client list are Camp Dudley YMCA of Westport, N.Y., the longest-running summer camp in the country, National Patient Safety Foundation of Boston and Bucknell (Pa.) University athletics.

"It's definitey mine now and we're just going to grow the heck out it," Jezouit said.
