Eagles Pull Out Thriller against Hornets

SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- Talk about saving the best stuff for last.

The McCann Tech and Mount Everett girls' soccer teams played nearly 54 minutes without either team scoring a goal on Monday. When the Hornets' Alexa Durant finished off a pass from Mary Nguyen with 26:19 left in the clock, the two teams then went on a five-goal scoring binge to close out the game.

When it was all said and done, the Eagles got a goal by Deseraye Conaway off an assist from Ericca Broderick with 3:27 remaining to earn a 3-2 win at thome. Despite the tough defeat, McCann (5-3-1) had to be satisfied with its effort, especially after losing 4-0 to Everett (3-5) in a game at home two weeks earlier.

If the Hornets ever meet up with the Eagles again, you can bet they'll be keeping an eye on Broderick, who tied the game a minute and a half after Durant opened up the scoring. Broderick then added an unassisted goal five minutes later to put the hosts on top 2-1. Nguyen tied the game with her 10th goal of the season in the 76th minute, but Conaway quickly had an answer with a tally of her own less than a minute later.

Senior Becky Daniels was a busy girl in the McCann goal, stopping 28 of the 31 shots she faced on the day. The Hornets next play at Westfield Voc. at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
