HOW TO PARENT HEALTHY KIDS IN THE DIGITAL AGE: SUPPORTING CONNECTION, RESILIENCE, AND CRITICAL THINKING
Williamstown, 6:00-7:30PM

Pine Cobble School will host How to Parent Healthy Kids in the Digital Age: Supporting Connection, Resilience, and Critical Thinking, a presentation for parents of elementary and middle school kids who are seeking developmentally appropriate guidance on preparing their kids to handle the complexities of digital life.

The evening will start with a presentation by educator, author, and parenting expert Betty Ray, who will share findings from her years of research as head of innovation at the George Lucas Educational Foundation and chief impact officer at Pandora’s Way.

Following the presentation will be a Q+A with Betty, as well as Pine Cobble Head of School Dr. Jill Romans, and developmental psychologist Scott Burg.

How to Parent Healthy Kids in the Digital Age: Supporting Connection, Resilience, and Critical Thinking will be held on March 5, 2026 at ‘62 Center for Performing Arts • Williams College Campus, Williamstown, MA. Doors open: 5:45p • Program: 6-7:30p ET.

The event is intended for parents and other caregivers of elementary and middle school students who are eager to take proactive steps for healthy digital engagement.  Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, and will leave with several actionable steps they can implement right away.

Dr. Romans said, “I am delighted that we can come together as a broader community and discuss this important topic for our youth through the lens of child development.  Betty’s focus on rites of passage is helpful in understanding the process for nurturing agency and empowerment for our students as they navigate an increasingly digital world.  We must be intentional in how we introduce children to this environment and ensure they have adequate skills to navigate digital platforms in healthy ways.”

Attendees will discover:

How to plan for the developmental shifts from childhood to adolescence.

How digital media is designed to engage the developing adolescent brain

A practical approach to introducing digital media and sustaining healthy development.

We invite families to complete a brief pre-event survey to share their questions, curiosities, and hopes for the conversation. Your responses will help shape the evening’s discussion.

About Betty Ray

Betty Ray is a consultant, writer, speaker, and mom who works with families and schools to help young people build the skills, mindsets, and inner capacities needed to navigate a complex digital world. She is the founder of the Center for RItual Design, where she creates frameworks and programs that help  build identity, agency, belonging, and purpose – key developmental milestones that predict resilience and strengthen mental health.  Her work draws on developmental psychology, education research, media literacy, and archetypal rites-of-passage traditions to support healthy adolescence, both online and in the real world. Betty has advised hundreds of families and partnered with schools and organizations to design programs that strengthen connection, character, and future-readiness.

About Pine Cobble

Located on 18 acres in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, Pine Cobble School has been rooted in experiential, child-centric education for almost 90 years. The hands-on curriculum develops critical thinking and problem-solving, from the almost-three-year-old Beginner getting their hands dirty in the school’s garden to the Grade 8 student testing a hypothesis in science class.  In addition to academics, the school cultivates a very strong sense of place, with the campus and extensive grounds functioning as extended classrooms.

Head of School Dr. Jill Romans joined Pine Cobble in 2025 having been drawn by the Pine Cobble promise, “A good beginning never ends.” A lifelong educator in independent schools with a clinical and academic background in pediatric neuropsychology, Dr. Romans has already seen how that promise defines the Pine Cobble experience.

“Our students understand from the very beginning that they are part of a community that cares deeply for them,” she says. “Our 4:1 student-faculty ratio allows our teachers to get to know each child individually, foster an environment of curiosity and kindness, and model how to resolve conflict when it occurs. To me, that’s the Pine Cobble difference,” she says, “and it’s the reason I’m so proud to be leading this extraordinary community.”
