George H. Bateman, 82
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — George H. Bateman, 82, of 106 Quivet Drive, East Dennis, formerly of North Adams, died on June 22, 2013, at the Cape Cod Hospital in Barnstable.
Born in North Adams on April 29, 1931, son of Warren and Charlotte Spencer Bateman, he attended the former Mark Hopkins School and graduated from Drury High School in 1948. He went on to attend the postgraduate program at Wilbraham Academy and earned his bachelor's degree in political science from from Bates College in 1953.
Mr. Bateman began his 34-year career with the former Sprague Electric Co. in 1955 as a time study analyst for a short period before joining human resources, or industrial relations. He held various management positions, most notably in Visalia, Calf., and in Nashua and Concord in New Hampshire before returning to North Adams as corporate director of human resources in 1967. He retired in 1989 from the Stamford, Conn., offices, one of the few remaining employees of the original company.
He enjoyed myriad outdoor activities. An avid hiker, he would spend countless hours in the mountains of the Berkshires, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and California. He was a proficient sailor and skier, including working at the former Dutch Hill Ski Area in Vermont after college, and canoed most of the major rivers in New England. He also belonged to many service organizations, notably as president of the former Northern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce and of the Northern Berkshire United Way, and as a director of the former Hoosac Savings Bank. He also had a keen interest in aviation.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, the former Jacqueline Desnoyers; four sons, Matthew Bateman, John Bateman, Thomas Bateman and Stephen Bateman, eight grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
His brother, Warren Spencer "Rene" Bateman, is deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Mr. Bateman will be private and burial will be in Southview Cemetery. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, is in charge of arrangements.
