David J. Polumbo, 76
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — David Joseph Polumbo, 76, of 102 Harding Ave. died peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Born in North Adams on Oct. 4, 1937, a son of John and Yvonne Senay Polumbo, he attended schools in North Adams and graduated from the former St. Joseph's High School. He also attended North Adams State College.
An Air Force veteran, he was stationed in Scotland.
Mr. Polumbo was the owner and operator of Sun Cleaners on River Street for many years.
He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister and lector. He served on the city of North Adams Board of Health and coached Little League Baseball for 13 years. He loved to cook, bake and tell jokes and enjoyed his getaways to Lake George, N.Y., and wintering in Florida. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriot fan.
He and his wife, the former Isobel Williamson, were married June 18, 1960, in Scotland.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Leslie Polumbo and her fiance, Chester Potash, of North Adams and Sharon Davignon and her husband, Jason, of North Adams; two sons, Scott Polumbo and his wife, Donna, of Salem, N.H., and Gary Polumbo and his wife, Rebecca, of North Adams; a brother, Gerald Polumbo of Pittsfield; six sisters, Mary LaGrotteria of Pittsfield, Phyllis Peirce of Dalton, Francis Patenaude, Joan Desnoyers, Barbara Carle of East Hanover, N.J., and Madelaine Baker of Dalton; eight grandchildren, Dina Rocha, McKenzie Hebert, Mitchell Anderson, Emma Polumbo, Joshua Polumbo, Zachary Davignon, Sarah Polumbo and Tanner Davignon, and a great-grandson, Jacob Rocha.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Richard Polumbo, Robert Polumbo and John Polumbo Jr., and three sisters, Beatrice Polumbo, Patricia McCloskey and Helen Jones.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at St. Elizabeth Church in North Adams. Burial will follow with military honors in Southview Cemetery. Calling Hours at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 4 to 7.
Memorial donations are suggested for the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire or the Eileen Barrett Foundation through the funeral home.
