Barbara E. McCarthy, 76, of 8338 Windway Drive,San Antonio, formerly of Pittsfield, died Aug. 28 at home. Born in Pittsfield on April 10, 1925, daughter of George Van Loon Sr. and Blanche DeLong Van Loon, she was a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Mrs. McCarthy served three years in the Women's Army Corps during World War II and later worked for 14 years in the Pentagon. She was a secretary for the Annandale (Va.) United Methodist Church for many years before moving to San Antonio. Locally, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Pittsfield. She leaves her husband, George E. McCarthy, whom she married Feb. 13, 1965; a daughter, Army Lt. Heidi Ellen Miller of San Antonio, and a brother, Paul Van Loon of Pittsfield. Mrs. McCarthy was also survived by her son-in-law, Army Sgt. Richard Miller, and her grandson, Darren Miller, both of San Antonio, and two nieces, Judy Bucker of Lee and Kathy Green of Sheffield. She was predeceased by a brother, George Van Loon Jr. Interment was at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors on Sept. 12, 2001.
