Catherine E. Southgate, 94
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Catherine E. Southgate, 94, of North Adams, died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, surrounded by her family at Williamstown Commons, where she had resided for the past two years.
A lifelong resident of the historic Blackinton neighborhood, she was born on Aug. 17, 1920, daughter of Earl and Bessie Kinsey Worthington.
Mrs. Southgate was employed first at the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates and later at the former General Cable Corp. in Williamstown, from which she retired.
She was the oldest member of the Blackinton Union Church and a member of the Church Guild.
Her husband of 38 years, William Southgate, died in 1978 after losing a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.
She leaves her son, Earl W. Southgate and his companion, Judith, of Pownal, Vt.; a grandson, Bill Southgate and his wife, Payton, of Pownal; a granddaughter, Melissa Southgate Reed and her husband, Dale, of North Adams; four great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Nichol of Maine, Jerica Southgate of Pownal, and Sierra and Elijah Holland of North Adams, and a niece, Lesa Piantoni Cady of Cromwell, Conn.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A private burial service for Mrs. Southgate will take place at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
