Norman Monette

Norman Monette, 82, of 85 Eagle St. died yesterday morning at home. Born in North Adams on Aug. 31, 1919, son of Stanislaus and Alexina Gagne Monette, he attended North Adams schools, including the former Notre Dame Parochial School. He was a World War II Army veteran in the European Theater. He was one of the first soldiers from this area transferred from the European Theater to the Pacific Theater following the end of hostilities in Europe. Before the war, Mr. Monette was employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. and returned there after his military service. He then joined the former Brightwater Paper Co. in Adams, which later became the James River Rochester Co. He retired from there in 1981 with more than 25 years of service. He was a communicant of Notre Dame du Sacre Coeur and a former member of the Greylock Community Club. He was active in the union at James River, and enjoyed playing golf. He leaves his wife, the former Alice Edna Roussin, whom he married June 8, 1940, in Notre Dame Church; a daughter, Marion P. Pontier of North Adams; a son, Normand Monette Jr. of Pittsfield; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Nine brothers and sisters are deceased, including Bertha Dupre, Marie Morin, Celina Duquette, Laura McGinnis, and Felix, Francis, Alfred, Ernest, and Lawrence Monette. Funeral Friday at 10:15 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Church, North Adams. Burial in the family lot in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made to the American Red Cross in care of the funeral home.
