Sophie Armata, 99

ADAMS, Mass. — Sophie Katherine Margaret Armata, 99, of Adams passed away on June 30, 2016, at the North Adams Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had resided since 2011.
Born in Adams on February 3, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Zigmund and Julia Scieszka Armata. In 1922, Sophie and her family returned to Poland, where she attended primary schools in Rzeszow and Jaroslaw. On February 8, 1935 Sophie and her brothers Theodore, William, and Edward set sail for America on the S.S. Pulaski, arriving at the port of New York 12 days later. After regrouping at her brother Walter's house, Sophie and her family settled back in Adams on 8 Victory St.
While in Adams, Sophie attended local schools and worked at the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Co. as a spare hand in the weaving shop, and later in the plastics division at General Electric in Pittsfield. She then moved to New York City, where she worked as a children's nanny for 14 years. Upon her return to Adams, Sophie became a caretaker for her mother Julia until her passing in 1973. From there Sophie settled on 97 Summer Street in Adams, where she resided until 2011.
Sophie was a devout Catholic her entire life. As a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Adams, Sophie made many close friends through the parish center and went on several trips where the blessed mother was being honored. In her earlier years, Sophie took an interest in playing the mandolin. On her days off in New York City, she enjoyed watching birds in the park and going to see films starring Clark Gable and Fred Astaire.
In recent times, Sophie enjoyed going for walks and foraging for berries off East Street in Adams. She also loved the beach, making several excursions to Hampton Beach, N.H., and once spending a week in Miami, Fla. Sophie enjoyed the company of her many friends and family, and loved to sing Polish songs and make others laugh. She will be eternally missed by all who loved her.
She is survived by three nephews, Peter Armata and his wife Barbara of Adams, Paul Armata and his wife Judy of North Adams, and Michael Armata and his wife Paula of Cheshire; two nieces, Susan Armata of West Stockbridge and Maryann Armata of Colorado Springs, Colo.; several grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; her brothers Walter, John, Theodore, William and Edward Armata; and her sister Eleanor Smaila.
