William E. Curtiss, 80

GREAT BARRINGTON -- William E. Curtiss, 80, of 43 Monument Valley Road died Friday at Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Mount Washington on Dec. 25, 1920, son of William and Elizabeth Chase Curtiss, he attended Egremont schools and the former Searles High School. He also attended the Unity School of Christianity in Kansas City, Mo., and graduated from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in South Portland, Maine, with an associate degree in waste-water management. Mr. Curtiss had also worked for Balgen Machine Shop, the former Clark Aiken Paper Co. and for Berkshire Engineering Corp., as a bulldozer operator. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 22. He enjoyed history and philosophy, gardening, crocheting afghans and painting. His paintings had hung at the former Val's Restaurant. He leaves his wife, the former Vivian R. Hart, whom he married Nov. 1, 1944, at First Methodist Church; a son, William W. Curtiss of Egremont; a daughter, Andrienne E. Vaughn of Kenasaw, Ga.; two sisters, Iona Seely of Fort Myers, Fla., and Wilma Vosburgh of South Egremont; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William E. Curtiss, who died Oct. 12, 2001, will be Monday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. at HICKEY-ROY FUNERAL HOME. Calling hours are Oct. 14 from 3 to 5 at the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to the Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad or to the Great Barrington Fire Department in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
