Henry Andrews Sr., 54

BECKET -- Henry J. Andrews Sr., 54, of Becket, a former selectman and assessor, died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center. Mr. Andrews served as a selectman from 1980 to 1990 and from 1991 to 1998. A former employee of Bendix in Chester, he also was a self-employed accountant and served as assessor for Becket from 1981 to 1984. Paralyzed in a 1966 automobile accident, Mr. Andrews worked for years to overcome his disability. In 1975, he received a grant from the Massachusetts Rehablitation Commission to take a six-month course in industrial methods and time management. In 1976, he was hired as a consultant at Bendix's abrasives mill in Chester, bought his first specially equipped van and received the governor's merit award on employment of the handicapped. Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 2, 1947, son of William W. and Ida May Farnham Andrews, he attended Becket Consolidated School and Wahconah Regional High School. Mr. Andrews served on the board of directors for Ad-Lib and was a member of the Salvation Army Becket Service Unit. He leaves his wife, the former Virginia Popek, whom he married Feb. 17, 1978, in Becket; a son, Henry J. "Justin" Andrews Jr. of Becket, and a brother, Thomas E. Andrews of Pittsfield. Another brother, William Andrews, died on June 29, 1993. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services will be on Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Becket. Burial will follow in the Becket Center Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee. Donations may be made to a scholarship fund for his son, Justin Andrews, in care of the Kelly Funeral Home.
