Prescott Coan

Prescott Coan, 84, of Stillwell Street, formerly of Boardman Street in Sheffield, died yesterday morning at Fairview Commons Nursing Home, where he had resided since 1996. Born in Haverill on July 10, 1917, son of Charles Bisbee Coan and Grace Hill Coan Weeks, he graduated from Hebron (Maine) Academy in 1936 and from Amherst College in 1940, where he majored in chemical engineering. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the destroyer Hillary P. Jones. Mr. Coan was employed as director of sales and marketing at Scott's Graphics until his retirement in the late 1970s. Previously, he had worked in the plastics industry at Monsanto Co. in the Springfield area, at Kalwall in New Hampshire and at Sheffield Plastics. He was an active member of Old Parish Church in Sheffield. He also was active in local politics and served as a member of the Sheffield Recycling Committee. His wife, the former Frances McTernen, whom he married Jan. 9, 1943, in Andover, died March 28, 1990. He leaves a daughter, Hillary C. Hoppock of Orinda, Calif.; a son, Jeffrey P. Coan of Southfield, and five grandchildren. A Service of Remembrance for Mr. Coan will be conducted Friday, Oct. 26, at 10 at Old Parish Church in Sheffield by the Rev. Arthur Kaufman, pastor. Burial will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
