Irene M. Williams

Irene M. Williams, 80, of Park Avenue, Sturbridge, formerly of Great Barrington and Housatonic, died Saturday at Providence House Nursing Home in Southbridge. Born in Turnbridge Wells, England, on Nov. 9, 1920, daughter of Alexander and Mildred Longhurst Cook, she emigrated to Newton as a child and graduated from Newton High School in 1937 and from Kathleen Dell School in 1940. She returned to England during World War II and then had resided in Housatonic and in Great Barrington until 1981, when she moved to Sturbridge. Mrs. Williams retired from Wheeler & Taylor Insurance Co. in Great Barrington after many years of service. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Southbridge, the Sturbridge Senior Center, the Harrington Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Southbridge Women's Club. She enjoyed gardening and was known for making dresses for dolls. Her husband, Charles Williams, died in 1991. She leaves two sons, Barry Williams of Sturbridge and Christopher Williams of Ashley Falls; a brother, Jack Cook of Housatonic; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 at Holy Trinity Church in Southbridge. Burial will follow in North Cemetery, Sturbridge. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at BELANGER-BULLARD FUNERAL HOME, 51 Marcy St., Southbridge. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Church, 446 Hamilton St., Southbridge, MA 01550, or to the Providence House Patients' Activities Fund, 84 Chapin St., Southbridge, MA 01550.
