George Harrington

George E. Harrington, 75, of Prospect Street, formerly of Bennington, Vt., died Sunday at North Adams Commons, where he had resided for three days. Born in Bennington on Aug. 12, 1926, son of Lynn J. and Irene Pierce Harrington, he attended schools there, including the former Cora B. Whitney School. He went to work at 14 in the Bennington Mills. Later, he was employed by the former Wall Streeter Shoe Co. and the forme Woolworth's. He retired in 1989 from the former J.C. Penney store on Main Street. His first wife, the former Isabelle Estes, whom he married June 7, 1947, is deceased. He leaves his wife, the former Emily Gardzina Suprenant, whom he married Sept. 1, 1979; a son, Robert C. Harrington of Williamstown; two daughters, Sandra M. Steuer of Williamstown and Diane H. George of New Ashford; a stepson, Craig Suprenant of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Donna Suprenant Neveu of Williamstown; a sister, Jennie Campney of Ganesboort, N.Y.; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. His brother, James E. Harrington, died in 1940 following motorcycle accident. The funeral will be Thursday at 1 from Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel in Williamstown, with the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor of South Williamstown Congregational Church, officiating. The burial will take place in the family plot in Southview Cemetery in North Adams. Friends may call at GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday from 6 to 8, when the family will be in attendance. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Adult Day Health Program, North Adams, through the funeral home, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267.
