Gladys H. Race

Gladys H. Race, 98, of North Street, Housatonic, died Saturday at Fairview Commons Nursing Home. Born in Housatonic on Sept. 28, 1903, daughter of Walter L. and Ida Hastings Nicholas, she graduated from the former Searles High School. Mrs. Race was employed by the former Monument Mills in Housatonic from the early 1940s until it closed in the 1950s. She worked at the former Home Gas in Housatonic until retiring in the early 1960s. Her first husband, Alfred Henry, whom she married in 1936, died in 1941. Her husband, Clarence Race, whom she married in 1966, died in 1976. She leaves a daughter, Beverly Marks of Housatonic; a stepson, Ronald H. Race of Housatonic; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. A stepson, Vernon M. Race, died in 1980. The funeral will be Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 1 at Housatonic Congregational Church, with the Rev. Anne Alvord, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 tomorrow, Nov. 27, at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Housatonic Congregational Church in care of the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
