Ruth D. Switzer

Ruth D. Switzer, 93, of 170 The Knolls died Sunday at Sweet Brook Health Care Center, where she had resided since 1999. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., on Feb. 13, 1908, daughter of Archibald Battle Davis Sr. and Sadie Andrew Davis, she graduated from New Rochelle High School. She moved to Winchester in 1939 and was employed by the American Red Cross for a number of years. She moved to Sarasota, Fla., in 1964 and returned to Williamstown in 1998. Mrs. Switzer was a member of the Church of the Covenant, Presbyterian, in Sarasota. She was also a longtime volunteer with the Red Cross in Winchester and in Sarasota. While in Sarasota, she was a member of Suncoast Masters Swim Club. She competed in national and world championship swim meets and set national and world records in several events well into her 80s. Her husband, Alan Alexander Switzer, whom she married May 17, 1929, died Jan. 11, 1980. She leaves two daughters, Nancy J. Foss of Williamstown and Carolyn R. MacKay of Richfield, Wis.; a son, Alan A. Switzer Jr. of Center Sandwich, N.H.; a sister, Jane D. Southwell of LaJolla, Calif.; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Switzer was predeceased by a sister, Harriet Davis Smith, and a brother, Archibald B. Davis Jr. Private graveside services and burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. There will be no calling hours. The omission of flowers is requested. Any memorial donations are suggested for the Suncoast Masters Swim Club of Sarasota, Fla., through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
