Garland R. “Ray” Young

Garland R. “Ray” Young, 84, of 24 Manville Street, Great Barrington died Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at Geer Memorial in Canaan, CT. Born in Leaksville, North Carolina, July 16, 1916 he was the son of Jon and Essie Pharris Young and was a 1931, graduate of Leaksville High School. Mr. Young joined the U. S. Army in 1934 and served during the Second World War in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. He was discharged with the rank of First Sargeant in 1945. He reenlisted in the U. S. Army in 1948 and served during the Korean War. He retired as a Master Srgeant in 1963. He was the recipient of the Silver Star, Soldiers Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and the Purple Heart with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. A resident of Long Island he worked as a guard at Grummans Aircraft until moving to Great Barrington in 1979. His wife Helen Sauer Young died May 1, 1983 and his daughter Helen L. Millot died January 24, 1993. He leaves a sister-in-law Marilyn J. Sauer who cared for him and a grandson Robert Millot of Fort Collins, CO. Funeral services for Garland R. Young who died January 9, 200l will be Saturday January 13, 200l at the HICKEY-ROY FUNERAL HOME at 10 AM with Rev. Wjll.iam Wallis offiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Family will receive family and friends on Friday, January 12th from 3-5 PM.
