Alfred J. Calvano

Alfred J. Calvano Sr., 81, of Silver Street died Tuesday at Fairview Hospital. Born March 27, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of Salvatore and Provendenzia Circardo Calvano, he attended Brooklyn schools. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Calvano served in Naples and in Rome. He owned and operated Tina's Restaurant in Brooklyn until 1955, when he started tending bar in several of Manhattan's upscale restaurants. He retired from La Marmitone in the early 1980s. Upon retirement, he moved to Austerlitz, N.Y., then to Great Barrington. Active with the Great Barrington Senior Center, he helped out in the dining room and was known as the "Caruso of the Senior Center." Mr. Calvano sang with the Searles Middle School band and performed a solo at last year's holiday program. He also was active with the Council on Aging. He and his wife, the former Helen Dolcimascolo, were married April 19, 1952, in New York. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Carol Dolan of Centreville, Va.; twin sons, Salvatore J. Calvano of Seaford, N.Y., and Alfred J. Calvano Jr. of Woodside, N.Y., and four grandchildren. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at 11 at St. Peter's Church by the Rev. William H. Wallis, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. The family will receive friends today, Nov. 29, from 3 to 7 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. Contributions in Mr. Calvano's memory may be made to the Southern Berkshire Elderly Transportation Association through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
