Robert A. Kateley, 89

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Robert Arthur Kateley, 89, of North Adams died Saturday, December 22, 2018, at the North Adams Commons.

He was born in North Adams on September 9, 1929, a son of the late Arthur Gentile Kateley and Marguerite (DeCoigne) Kateley. Bob graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1948, where he was a member of both the varsity football and basketball teams. He then attended St. Michaels College in Colchester, Vt., where he was a member of the football team.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of the North Adams American Legion. Mr. Kateley served as the Command Sergeant Major for the Massachusetts National Guard in North Adams for 41 years. He also was a salesman for Met-Life and Prudential Insurance Companies. Bob last worked as a school bus driver for J.T. Bus Lines.

He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Church and formerly of Our Lady of the Incarnation Church, both in North Adams. He was very active in the North Adams Youth Programs with his family for many years. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

His first wife, Barbara (Miller) Kateley, whom he married April 14, 1952, died October 28, 1988. His second wife, Sylvia (Chalifoux) Kaigle-Kateley, whom he married in September of 1990, died February 18, 2014.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Kateley Flaherty of North Adams and Lynn Hall of Adams; a sister, Doris Trimarchi of Clarksburg; seven grandchildren, Tanya, Aubree, Jeremy, Trevor, Casey, Ryan and Holly; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sons, James Kateley, who died June 3, 1977, and Thomas Kateley, who died August 28, 2008.

Funeral notice: Funeral services to celebrate the life of Robert A, Kateley will be celebrated Saturday, December 29, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, Mass. Calling hours are from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Burial with military honors will take place in Southview Cemetery in the spring. Memorial donations are suggested for the North Adams Youth Basketball League through the funeral home.

Patti, Sorry to read about your father. We had some good times teasing him at your house on Kateley Lane. We even got your mother laughing with us when I was there for Sunday dinners.
