Edmund J. Germanowski, 95

ADAMS, Mass. — Mr. Edmund J. Germanowski, 95, of Adams died Sunday evening, February 17, 2019, at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield. 

He was born in Adams on July 13, 1923, a son of the late Walter and Mary (Starsiak) Germanowski. He attended Adams schools and graduated from the former Adams High School with the Class of 1942. He also graduated from the former Bliss Business College in North Adams with a degree in accounting. 

Mr. Germanowski was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater. He was on a bombing mission when his aircraft was shot down over Yugoslavia, and he was captured and held as a Prisoner of War. He was Honorably Discharged as a Technical Sergeant in 1945, and for actions in combat received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with Four Battle Stars and the Purple Heart Medal. After returning from his military service, Mr. Germanowski began a long career with the U.S. Postal Service, working as a clerk, letter carrier, and finally as a supervisor until he retired. 

He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, was a member of Adams Post 160 American Legion, and enjoyed stamp collecting. 

His wife, the former Mildred H. Galipeau, whom he married on September 17, 1949, died on April 11, 2018. 

He is survived by two sons, Peter Germanowski and his wife, Lynn, of Pittsfield, and David Germanowski and his wife, Lisa, of Northampton; a daughter, Kathryn Halstead and her husband, Randall, of Arlington, Mass.; four grandchildren, Candace, Laura, Kayla and Carson; two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Cory; a brother, Walter Germanowski of Adams; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. 

He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Zegarowski.

Funeral notice: The funeral will be held on Friday, February 22, 2019, at 9 a.m. from the Paciorek Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St. Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, celebrated by Rev. Steven Montesanti, Pastor. 

Burial will be in the Spring in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Thursday, February 21, 2019, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Alert Hose Company, 3 Columbia St., Adams, MA 01220.
